You are both right of course. But, as you so eloquently alluded to, TGS, Shayne got there first. Dawson discovered Piltdown Man in 1912. It wasn't until 1953 that it was absolutely proven to be a fake.

I should add that it has not been proven that Dawson was the faker, but there does seem to be a lot of evidence that points that way.

Edited to add: TGS has probably retired for the evening, so here's a story (probably apocryphal) from the days when there were such things as telegrams.

A man was away from home when he realised that he had a coal delivery due. So he sent a telegram to his neighbour asking him to supervise the delivery. His neighbour duly did so, and sent a telegram to confirm this.

Both men wanted to minimise the word count, and therefore the charge. They did amazingly well: each telegram was a mere one character long, not counting the signature.

What were the contents of these messages?

This turned out trickier than I intended.

Hint: the message is contained in what each character sounds like (with a certain amount of artistic licence) when spoken aloud.

I'll give another clue in the morning if no one has it by then.
