Brick by brick world-building - yup, a good description. But sometimes he has to tell us how to make the bricks, too. My daughter gave me the trilogy for Father's Day, and I finally finished it last night. The third one was the hardest slog. I can't tell you how many other books I also read in the past month, but short stories are looking pretty good right now.
Oh, I did read Sawyer's 'Wonder' in five hours straight through when I should've been sleeping. I guess I'm an action book kind of guy. |

I read his first? book, Elantris, late last year and enjoyed it quite a bit. This series is on my to-read list for when I get around to it.

Mistborn is one of the more readable and original fantasy series I've read in the past 30 years. I'm looking forward to the latest instalment in that universe which will be released in a few months I think.
Way of Kings was even better. A bizarre world but very original and interesting. Sanderson has a style the really fits my current tastes in fantasy so I find him very easy to read. |

"Warbreaker" use to be free on his site. I notice there is still a free HTML version on his site.

I'm a really big fan of his work. I've always been a sucker for high magic fantasy with intricate world building. I've read all his stuff written with adults in mind, and the Mistborn trilogy is probably my favorite work. I actually use it as a fall-back Christmas present for my more nerdy friends

My brother is Brandon Sanderson's assistant (Peter Ahlstrom, the one who gets a different adjective in each acknowledgements). Detailed magic systems are what he does best. It's not going to appeal to everyone. I have found that his writing has gotten a lot better since Elantris (that one, I enjoyed the story but the writing was just a bit rough).
I still haven't read Way of Kings (shhhh!) but it's on my list. I did enjoy Mistborn and will probably give it a re-read in the next couple of years. There's a new Mistborn book coming out (Alloy of Law) that's set about 300 years later. I got to read the ARC just last month and liked it a lot. (It's quite a bit shorter, which may be a plus for some people!) Warbreaker is also pretty good (and the Alcatraz Vs. The Evil Librarians series, though those aren't available as ebooks). |

I loved Elantris and so when the Mistborn trilogy came out, I snapped them up. Absolutely loved them all, though I'd say I loved the last one slightly less enthusiastically as the two before. :P

Sanderson writes what could be (and sometimes is) called Hard Fantasy. It's analogous to Hard SF, with lots of discussion about magic systems and the nuts and bolts of magic in general. I like that sort of story a lot.
I guess I'm a magic system geek. |

As promised, I'm reporting back on "Mistborn", which I finished a few days ago (I read other books in between, hence the delay). My verdict on the trilogy: superb. Mr Sanderson keeps the twists in the tale coming - the final outcome of the story took me completely by surprise.
Unlike some of the earlier posters, I enjoyed the third book in the trilogy at least as much - if not more - than the first two. There are very detailed explanations of the "magic system", yes, but for me, this enhances the book, rather than being detrimental to the story. I can't wait for the next book in the series. Already pre-ordered at Amazon! |

If you enjoyed it, I would really recommend Warbreaker. Different world and concept, but the same kind of writing and world building.
I find that it's as good, if not better than Mistborn. I would actually love if he'd write more books in his Warbreaker world. His works are definitely some of the best fantasy I ever read, in my opinion. |
