Blood on the Tracks by Cecelia Holland, a concise history (Kindle Single) of the relatively unknown Great Railroad Strike of 1877 in the US. It's gritty and relevant and reads like historical fiction. I like how Kindle Singles and others are putting out creative nonfiction stories longer than an article but shorter than a book.

The City of Ember, Jeanne DuPrau. I watched the movie so reading would be fast.

Just finished The Island of Doctor Moreau by H G Wells. I enjoyed this book. I think I might have seen one of the movies before and it didn't make much of an impression on me, but the book seemed much better.
Now I'm reading Age of Giants - awakening by Rob Reaser. This is a read for my indie review website. |

2 pages into City of Ember and I happened to stop to surf the Internet and wow, there's a short story written as a prequel to the series Riyria Revelations. It's called The Viscount And The Witch, and it comes free on Smashwords and the author's website. While waiting (impatiently) for Percepliquis, this is a good way to forget that Riyria Revelations has only 6 books...

Been reading short-stories in the morning and Neal Stephenson's REAMDE the rest of the time.
Notable short stories in this batch: "Staying Behind" by Ken Liu (from Clarkesworld Issue 61). A rather poignant post-apocalyptic tale with a unique twist on the apocalypse—which isn't your run-of-the-mill nuclear-fallout/war/plague/zombies variety. Rather amazing, really, how much he got me to care in so few words. Also, "The Nearest Thing" by Genevieve Valentine (from Lightspeed's Aug 2011 Issue). A heartbreaking A.I. tale where the A.I. isn't a SkyNet predecessor. ![]() REAMDE is still going great. I haven't been able to dedicate as many marathon reading sessions to it as I'd like, but it's not a race I guess. So far, I'd have to say it's probably the most accessible work of his I've read. He's obviously never going to be considered "light reading," but it can be nice sometimes to not have to re-read sections to make sure you didn't miss anything, too (although I'm sure you could if you really wanted to). The pacing has felt very natural so far... tension, release... tension, release. Like any good musical composition. ![]() |

Just finished reading New Rules: Polite Musings from a Timid Observer by Bill Maher (2003). Sometimes I think he can be an infuriating idiot and other times he's a very astute observer of the political scene, but he's always funny and well worth reading. Four stars out of five.

and use the "tell me about a lower price. It will ask you where you found it cheaper and you can mention iBookstore where it is $0.00. (http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/the-...ia/id471773875) If enough people tells Amazon - my hope is that they will match the free price. Thanks again for helping to spread the news about the short story. |

No Country for Old Men, Cormac McCarthy.
Pretty good, took a while to get into the writing style and having not seen the film was a little disconcerting intially. |

Hot damn! There's a Perry Mason book available for the Kindle. The Case of the Runaway Corpse by Erle Stanley Gardner. Maybe the copyright owners are testing the waters. This is book #47 of the series of 84. I'd rather they started with The Case of the Velvet Claws, but...
Wait! They have that also! Oh happy day! Mason has come to Kindle! |

Wonderful! I'm glad to see this happening. I was glad to see Steinbeck available, but the prices suck!
