What's going on?

I haven't yet got a Kindle,(I'm trying to get up to speed on all this) but I looked into Project Gutenberg to see what I could get. I choose a book, and asked that it appear in Kindle. It wouldn't open or appear. I asked that it appear in PDF , and it did.

If I had a Kindle, does this mean that I couldn't load it?

Jeez, all I want to do is load free books and read them.

What do you mean when you say "you asked that it appeared in Kindle"? Have you installed the "Kindle for PC" application on your PC?

It means you already have a PDF reader installed on your computer (most likely adobe) but you don't have software that will let you read .mobi files. Just install the free application "Kindle for PC" on your computer and the Kindle files will open from project Gutenberg.

But seriously, I read PG book on my Kindle all the time... and no... PDF is not the way you want to go. Download Kindle version... put on Kindle. I'd check the library here first, though, since they tend to be more lovingly crafted than the PG versions.

Geez, lighten up! He was kidding and did respond to your question (and it wasn't exactly clear).

It's difficult to want to help someone with an adversarial attitude.

Thanks Skydog. I'll be the judge of whether he was kidding or not. I dont like responses which double speak; i.e. a bit of a sneer and then a kiss and make up. I've been around too long to swallow that line.

I'd prefer it if you didn't come away with ill judged comments on 'adversarial attitudes'. I get contempt and you make comments. It's not for you to say, is it? Thanks.

Mr. Whippy, to repeat my question, have you installed the "Kindle for PC" program on your PC? A Windows computer, which I'm going to assume for the moment that you're using, does not have any built-in capability for displaying a Kindle book. You need to install a program in order to be able to read them. The free "Kindle for PC" program, which you can download from Amazon, is the best program to use for doing so.

Wow. Just goes to show you never can tell what entirely innocuous thread is going to tip into OMG Internet Dramaz!!!

But getting back to the original question: if you don't yet own an e-book reader of any sort, you'll probably be wanting detailed directions. So...if you want to put a book from Project Gutenberg (or from this site or from any other non-Amazon place on the Internet) onto your Kindle, you will need to:

1) Download the version of the file most appropriate for your device (usually that will be .mobi, .prc, or .azw, though many other file formats are more or less readable as well).

2) Consult the video on this Kindle support page to see how to transfer the file. (You can skip the first 1:35 or so of the video, as that part is mostly concerned with manually transferring purchased Amazon content.)
