I just received 3 today that had been on pre-order for a couple of months:

The Best American Essays 2011
The Best American Short Stories 2011
The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2011

Me, too! I've been counting down the days until IQ84 is released for a while!

I haven't pre-ordered it, though. I will probably get it from Kobo or Sony, I still have to see. I might pick up a hard-cover copy as well. I don't do that often, but I do it with favourite authors. I still have to get the new Banana Yoshimoto book in hardcover, though. I have the ebook and I had the paper copy of the book on pre-order, but there was some mix-up and I cancelled the order... but I haven't yet seen a paper copy in any of my local bookstores!

Edited to add: Never mind, I just checked again, and it looks like my local chapters just got some in.

I've picked up paper editions of earlier "Best American" series. Always good writing. I'll have to take a look at these.

This is also one of the authors I buy from hardcover in First Edition only (English).

I'm still missing about 4 of his First Editions.

The point is you get it as soon as its out. In case of Kindle on Android there might even be a notification message popup involved if you leave the Kindle app running (better not to though at least on my phone it sucks the battery dry if I do). In lack of that Amazon might be kind enough to remind you by email.

But with a physical device, I might want to use it as soon as I get it. But, unless I'm not reading anything at the time it comes out, I'd only download it and wait till I finish my current book...

Sometimes the preorder prices are lower. Also, at least Amazon, if the price happens to go down before it comes out you would get the lower price.

You can use ERIQ Advanced search for Amazon. Set "Sort Results" to publication date and it will show the preorders first. B&Ns will usually be similar price if they are carrying the book. Kobo, Sony and BooksOnBoard do not show preorders.

what a bummer, right?

I also have my eye on 1q84 and the Steve Jobs bio but I will probably wait until they come out.

Never, ever do I pre-order.

The words will be exactly the same a few months later, with an ebook you can't walk around with it to show everyone you're in the favoured few, and it'll be cheaper later.

Yes, and if you pre-order, you are guaranteed the lowest price between the time you ordered the book and the time it is released. It might get cheaper after the pub date, though.
