Just as there are "B&N exclusive" eBooks, Smashwords-exclusive eBooks, etc. etc. It's the free choice of the author who they choose to sell their work through.

I'm fairly confident if Amazon was a monopoly they would have been shut down already or at least sued many times.
If proprietary meant monopoly than we'd have many other companies shut down as well and many electronics companies would qualify as monopolies. Heck, thinking of that AZW argument, isn't an AZW file really just a mobi file with a different extension? It's not even really proprietary. The DRM may be proprietary, but that could be put on top of a plain mobi file anyway. It makes me wonder (and probably simple enough to check) whether I could rename a AZW with DRM to .mobi and have my Kindle still read it (assuming I'm on the correct device and it is my copy to begin with). Conversely could one rename a .mobi file with a .azw extension and have it work. Ah well... considering all these Linux distributions and their versions, you'd think the Linux people were a monopoly... Look at all the devices they have their fingers in ![]() |

Your logic slightly eludes me. Amazon owns Mobipocket, so in what way does the fact that AZW files are renamed Mobi files (which they are) make them less proprietary?

Remember that while Amazon might own Mobipocket, there are many sellers out there selling Mobi files just as there were before Amazon purchased them (Smashwords being one example). If Amazon was being monopolistic, they'd probably charge a fee for use of the format; I'm guessing they don't given the free books being offered on other websites. Anyway, it's just a minor thing that I suppose depends on how you look at it. Heck one could argue EPUB is proprietary to Adobe and on from there... There are probably more proprietary formats than not in the commercial world anyway. |

The original poster is obviously trolling to get a reaction. I'm not sure why they are not reprimanded in some way. This thread is going nowhere.

I'm with Font on this one.
Amazon is a monopoly because they sell lots of stuff and lots of people buy from them. Their competitors are at a disadvantage because they don't have as many customers and don't make as much money. Plus if you buy a Kindle book from Amazon you can't read it on a Nook, so Amazon has monopoly. Before any one says it, "You can't buy a book from Barnes & Noble and read it on your Kindle either." Well, this is also Amazon's fault and once again proves they have a monopoly. The Kindle has 3G access. Monopoly. The Kindle has its own book store. Monopoly. There is only one river in the world called the Amazon River. Monopoly. In regards to the Operating System issue. I think Font is right there too, BUT even if Harry is right it just proves that Amazon has a monopoly. Just the facts people. Just the facts. |
