I think it'd be a good idea to change the "ABC's Kindle" text at the top to one's phone number "Call: 1234567890".
The contact details that can be entered in the settings menu are three pages deep, and if the lost Kindle is recovered by a person who is unfamiliar with the device, he might never see that page. I know it looks tacky to put up the phone number on the home screen, but it might be a good idea for someone who travels with the kindle a lot and/or is prone to misplacing personal belongings. |

All this is another reason to buy that $79 kindle. While loosing it would be a bummer... that's only a bit more than a tank of gas to replace.

One of the Craig's List scams was for someone to sell a fully functional Kindle at a cut rate price. Then a couple of hours or days later the 3G/WiFi stops working and the user finds out that the Kindle was reported as stolen.
Either people reported it late or the seller was hoping to get the Kindle back and resell it. Rinse and Repeat. There is always room for abuse but I prefer the small chance that disgruntled spouse or whatever over a thief or someone who picked up my lost Kindle using it. |

One change they could make is to require your amazon password to de-register a device from the device it self. This way, if someone found or stole a kindle the could not deregister it... once this is in place amazon could put into place the only someone that is the currently registered owner can blacklist the kindle.
Just an idea. I think the best idea is to keep good tabs on your kindle. ![]() BOb |

And sometimes stuff happens. Sometimes people lose stuff. It would be nice if people did the right thing and turned it in or called the numbers provided on the device or called Amazon. That doesn't happen and I am fine calling Amazon and bricking the lost/stolen item. |

If the books are on a Kindle, even one that has been deregistered, you lose the license. Otherwise, one person could put their one book on many, many Kindles, deregister them, and exceed the 6 license limit.

When you buy a book for the Kindle it tells you the number of licenses that come with the book. Once you have placed the book on a Kindle you have used one of the licenses.
There is some question if the license returns to fold when the book is removed from the device or not. I have known people who have had to call Amazon in order to get licenses back because they reached the max. |

I also notice the "number of devices" that used to be listed on Kindle books no longer seems to be there. At least not in the 5 or so books I just spot checked. The current TOS that I see says: Use of Digital Content. Upon your download of Digital Content and payment of any applicable fees (including applicable taxes), the Content Provider grants you a non-exclusive right to view, use, and display such Digital Content an unlimited number of times, solely on the Kindle or a Reading Application or as otherwise permitted as part of the Service, solely on the number of Kindles or Other Devices specified in the Kindle Store, and solely for your personal, non-commercial use. Digital Content is licensed, not sold, to you by the Content Provider. The Content Provider may include additional terms for use within its Digital Content. Those terms will also apply, but this Agreement will govern in the event of a conflict. Some Digital Content, such as Periodicals, may not be available to you through Reading Applications. I have not looked in the terms of service. I have had friends who have gifted old Kindles and sold old Kindles who have run into the license problem. They have spent a few hours on the phone with CS having them reinstate licenses for books that had been on the sold or gifted units.
They had a lot of books so it took a while. |
