There is no software I'm aware of which will do it on non-Windows platforms. Because you need a Windows system to purchase Reader books in the first place, the conversion tools which handle that format are also Windows-based.

An option would be to buy MobiPocket books, rather than Reader books. Mobi books can be bought on the bookstore website directly, and their DRM can be removed using a Python-based tool which is platform-independent. All you'd need would be a valid Mobi PID (the "serial number" of a Mobi machine) to use to buy the books and remove their DRM. You don't need to actually own a Mobi machine for this - you just need a PID.

You do need windows to purchase DRMed LIT books. But they can be deDRMed on any platform using convertlit.

I have never tried it, but MS Reader can be made to work under Wine - for example see Installing Microsoft Reader on Linux. Sohaib Athar does not speak directly to the buying LIT ebooks issue, which I think only requires Internet Explorer (under Wine) after MS Reader has been "authorized" once, see FictionWise's Saving Microsoft Reader Files on your PC:.

Hmm... for a Linux/Mac user the Kindle looks better and better. Actually, I anticipate needing to run a Windows VM so I can use Visual Studio... so I guess it's not too much of an issue. Now to decide on Linux or Mac.

You can just buy mobipocket books and de-drm them instead. Don't need windows/wine etc for that.

That is not 100% true. One of the recent DRMed Mobipocket eBooks I have had DRM that needed Mobipocker Reader to allow it to have the DRM removed. It needed a username/password to be able to read it and the only way to remove the UN/PW was to use Mobipocket Reader to send it to my SD card. Then I could remove the PID DRM. That won't work unless you have Windows.

Basically, if you do not have Windows, you can be well and truly screwed.

That won't work any more unless you already have version 0.01 and 0.02 as they are no longer up online. So if you don't have these two versions of the Python programs, you can't get them.

Here is the link to 0.02... http://pastebin.com/m12cec25b

As you can see, it's expired. So good luck. 0.01 is the same as well.

So the only sure thing these days is Windows using MS Reader (activated) and ConvertLIT.

It isn't on pastebin but can still be located using Google. So far as I know, mobihuff.py is completely legal but it is gone from pastebin as well.

Umm its a very small and simple modification to version 0.02 to get it to work on all .mobi books
