"Maybe," is the answer to that. It has been ruled that simply stripping the DRM is not necessarily enough to trigger the DMCA. However, even some personal uses might be. It's a gray area, and basically, they can decide you're doing something illegal if they want to. It is, at the very least, a breach of license.

...Here's a perfect example of what I mean. And it is only one way in which this can happen - it has happened through several different means of discontinued support.

It depends on where you live.

Even where it is illegal you are not likely to have the cops kick in your door and arrest you. The only way the companies will know that you have stripped DRM is if you say that you have or you start selling or giving away DRM free books at a pirated site.

now i am using pocket book 301 and I am really satisfied with its performance. I don't find Kindle to be really amazing coz it will not support most of the format.

Well that's not going to happen. What I do, I do for my own protection.

Exactly. That is what everyone who removes DRM on this board does.

Even if you don't want to remove the DRM, you should be saving your books to your hard drive and some place else. That way you have them in your possesion so that you have a choice if any of the bookstores you use collapses or goes away.

Amazon dissolving is the least of my concerns. Sony and BN are more likely to go away before Amazon and that is not likely to happen.

I am loyal to amazon & the kindle. I wouldn't move anywhere else.

If someone puts out an e-reader that I prefer to the Kindle, I will move. The way the market is working now, that is not going to happen because all of the e-readers are sure looking like one another.

There's also one more reason to convert Amazon books. Calibre adds page numbers. I hate opening up a book and not knowing approximately how long it'll take me to read through it. Locations don't do it for me. I need page numbers.

Kindle added page numbers in a firmware update 6 or so months ago.

They only add page numbers to select books now.

Again, thanks for the advice!

Concerning copyright issues: in most European countries, the only "criminal" thing is to share (and make profit out of it). Downloading stuff for P2P can be punished with a fine, but you can't go to prison.

I guess in US they are a little bit stricter!

Ciao!

You should see most Asian countries. People overlook them because they're the hotbed for piracy and it is rare that anything is done about it, but the actual laws in most Asian countries are one step away from execution/prison for life/whatever other nasty you can think of for any form of piracy.
