As someone who reads a lot of PDF technical ebooks and docs, and who has dodgy close up vision, an iPad size tablet is what works for me. PDFs on a 7 inch screen (of a type with lots of diagrams and images so reflow doesn't help much) just don't work for me.

Ditto web pages.

A 7 inch screen, or smaller even, is fine for text documents where I can increase font size.

The new Amazon tablet is aimed, it seems to me, squarely at US consumers buying from the Amazon ecosystem. The lack of 3G, the move away from the standard Android marketplace limits what it can do. And the lack of availability of movies and music outside North America and to some extent the UK limit it's international attractiveness. As it stands it's a different beast to the iPad. If I was in the US I think I'd still go for the iPad because of the range of apps that allow me to read/view media from a number of sources. Not to mention creative stuff like drawing and photo editing. And have an eink kindle for reading text type books, as e-ink is much better for non PDF reading.

Have you tried the old, "Buy me this and I'll never ask you for anything else again" trick. Of course My Husband doesn't believe it anymore. He never did.

Yes, I think the iPad would have sold a LOT fewer if it had come out only in 7". At 7" you don't have a new device, you have a large phone. There isn't enough extra room to develop the kind of innovative apps that make having an iPad such a wonderful experience.

If a tablet was ONLY for reading books, then 7" makes sense. Book reading is but one thing the iPad is good for.

I do think Apple should release a 6 or 7" iPod Touch XL. iPhone/iPod apps run on a larger screen. But it would not be an iPad.

Lol. Yeah my wife gives me the same look. It's not burning money. It's making an investment!!!!

I am curious why they never increased the screen size of their phones and iPod touches. Obviously, people want devices that are those sizes.

The 10" screen was big factor for me, I need to read pdf's and it is close enough to a4 that it doesn't have to reflow the pdf, and I can read it well in its native layout.

I am liking the new kindle fire from the sounds of it, but, after buying the iPad on a bit of a whim (I was in the return period for a sony ereader I wanted for pdfs), for $50 more than the sony I got an iPad.

I now rarely use my home PC. I have never been happier with a gadget, and I am not a big apple fan, but I will give credit where credit is due.

And this is why my Hubby and I each get a monthly allowance that we can spend how we want. The other can mock a purchase but not question it.

The system works nicely.

Huh??? You just said they didn't do a 7" tablet because there wasn't a market for it. Well, doesn't it stand to reason that they didn't do larger iPhones because there wasn't a market there also?
