Not sure how they will go about doing that, given the nature of usenet.

Tim Kuik is somebody who has been compared to some famour Spanish nobleman... Only his windmills are virtual.
BREIN is the most scary thing ever. It starts to look as if they can do everything that the law has forbidden and nobody is stopping them. He's a great proponent to internet censure. |

True, he has that ... At some time in the future, you won't see any Dutch person online anymore, because he'll have stopped internet access because "you can find copyrighted stuff there..."

Well, to be honest, Usenet has been dead for at least 5-10 years anyway.
I remember not only when it used to be useful, but when it was even used an an example of how anarchy could be a successful political system, since Usenet was so good at self-policing. :-O |

Sadly, Usenet has degenerated from a set of useful technical discussion groups to nothing more than a distribution system for pirated material. Commercial Usenet providers know damned well that they're essentially selling access to pirated content. I have absolutely zero sympathy for them.

The Usenet may be dying, but it still is limping along.
They can perhaps get to what a Usenet "Provider" may have on its servers, but that would only be a small portion of the Usenet that they are all linked into. It even still has ebook related newsgroups. Luck; Ken |

The interesting point is, of course, that whereas "traditional" pirate sites such as TPB can only be accused of facilitating copyright infringement, Usenet providers are committing copyright infringement, since the pirated material is hosted on their servers. I'm a little surprised that they haven't been targetted before: they look like a pretty "soft target" for lawsuits.

True, but many of the biggest are. I'm thinking of providers like Giganews.

I'm also thinking that since they are already fighting other sharing networks (ed2k, torrents, direct download...), they just might be too occupied to start fighting usenet now.

Time will tell. I'm certainly not a supporter of any sort of piracy, and companies which make a profit from it (as Usenet providers are essentially doing) come pretty low down the evolutionary ladder in my mind.
