oh, man, do i ever agree! i'm so sick and tired of the negative-isms from non-kindle owners who're just trolling here looking for something to criticize and the problem with that is a newbie won't know that a particular poster is just a habitual nay-sayer (maybe this is not a real word) and only worthy of being ignored.

Amazon is doing off-line whole-file reflowing. Calibre also does this, with some manual intervention allowed (often required) to remove headers and footers.

What Adobe Digital Editions does is in-line single-page reflowing. An advantage(?) of ADE's approach is that you still know where the page breaks are, and also the process isn't completely defeated by a single unconvertable page (ADE will show it without reflowing, but will likely be able to reflow the next page).

Yes, the Kindle is wonderful. Yes the problems you see exist. Many of the problems are due to pdf's. As to the ability to read epub's its a bit deeper than that. Most books are 'protected' by copy protection (DRM) and even when they are not protected, many are still not in the public domain -- you are not supposed to send them between buyers. This means that sanctioned use will occur through official channels. For the Kindle this means through the Amazon store, and it works very smoothly. If you want to trade around books you have two issues to address. First, is it legal -- it may well be, but its not always. Two, since it is not the standard acquisition channel it will take some extra work.

The reports of the ease of use of the Kindle come from two points of view. People who just want to work get their stuff through the Amazon store. Those who are more demanding must be willing to finagle the system.

Finally, the best advice I could offer you is to return it. Amazon has a very liberal/easy return policy if you don't want your Kindle. Frankly, this is another reason I tend to recommend it so highly. But if doesn't work for you and your friend then email Amazon back and return it.

Dictionary.com has it listed both ways. It seems to be user's choice. However, Firefox's spellchecker does prefer it as a single word instead of hyphenated.

Hmm.. Random House Webster's had it listed as "naysayer." Anybody got access to the OED?

ETA: "Compound terms are often introduced into the language as separate or hyphenated words, and as they become more commonplace, they tend to fuse into a single word" (American Psychological Association's Publication Manual, pg 90 section 3.11).

So, historically, it was originally nay sayer... then nay-sayer... and now it's turned into naysayer.

The Kindle uses the Oxford Dictionary, and it too has "naysayer" - no hyphen.

I was thinking of the ginormous, multi-volume OED that gives the history of every word in the English language. I'm curious when the hyphen disappeared.

ETA: Oh, oops... looks like I've got OED access. So, in 1628, we've got, "A gude asker wald have a gude na sayer." And then in 1721, "A sturdy Beggar should have a stout Naysayer."

But in 1974, "Further to refute the nay-sayers, he cites poll after poll in which Americans say they are happy." But then again in 2000, "Many naysayers‥are trying to showcase the California experience as a dismal failure."

So, it looks like there is no clear consensus.
