Should Children Have Own Amazon Account

I've been pondering this for a bit and would like to get some feedback.

I've ordered two Kindle Fires for my children (ages 9 and 11). I certainly don't want them to have access to my Amazon content (books, movies, music), so should I de-register the devices when they arrive and re-register them with a new Amazon account setup for the kids only? This way they can have their own wishlist and receive recommendations based on their own stuff.

Should each child have their own account or would that be overkill? I would like one account because I know they have similar movie / tv show interests so I wouldn't have to buy content twice. Then again one person's new books would automatically download on the other person's device. Hmmm. Wait a minute, that's not true. When you buy it goes to a specific device.

Well if you have each kid having their own account they could still trade kindles if one wanted to read something that the other one had on their ereader. So if the 9 yr old wanted to read something that the 11 yr old had on their kindle they could just swap kindles. Of course you can also choose which kindle device (or app) a given book is sent to upon purchase and then later choose to send it to another device under the same account later I would think too. So you could have a given ebook downloaded down to the Kindle reader App on your computer and then later go back into Manage your Kindle and have the book sent to Kindle9 or Kindle11 as you chose.

I agree with your reasoning. I'd set up a single Amazon account and use it for both your children, so that content can be shared.

How do you stop children buying stuff for themselves and marking up huge bills?

That's precisely the reason for setting up an account that's separate from your own. Don't have a credit card on the account.

I agree.

You should be sure to check any auto sync selections, however, just in case they are reading the same book at the same time, but are at different locations.

Um, put the 'fear of God' into them? LOL! My son has his own acct - I HAD to put my credit card in because it wasn't letting him download even free samples without one. Maybe a gift card or prepaid card would work, but I just put my credit card in. I know my son would *NEVER* buy something on the sly. Now, let's just say my kids (both of them, the 12-year-old and the 3-year-old) are definitely NOT 'children of the year' when it comes to their discipline level or general behaviour. But to buy stuff on my credit card without asking ... the 12-year-old knows that I'd immediately find out. Maybe it varies with different kids and people just have to know their own child, but I know my niece, too, who shares an acct with me (she is 15), I also trust her fully not to go ordering things, because again, I'll find out

I think a shared child account would be good - if they'll share. I kind of LOL'd at the above who said, "They can just swap kindles" ... Oh, to have easy-going kids who would just swap something like that. No, my son would not swap. He wants his own account with HIS name - he's very adamant about it. The thing is, it is coming in handy now, because we have 2 KSO's and now that they aren't letting people use more than one code per ACCOUNT, now I have another account to order things on. Every once in a while the things my son wants/does that drive me crazy actually become helpful

Parental control feature is very long overdue for Amazon Kindle. Nook has had it for quite some time. They have separate Nook Kids app where you can restrict access to new books and purchases, yet books are still under your account so they can be shared among your children.

Get yourself another email address and open an Amazon account using the new email address and either your current or another credit card. When the Fires arrive de-register them and re-register them under the new email address.

Amazon will send you immediate emails of any activity by your children. This could turn out to be and handy learning tool as you go over the account with them.

I always gave my kids a tad more responsibilities than I thought they could handle. Most of the time it worked out well. Although I had to have a couple of "responsibility chats" I never had to withdraw any privileges.

Regards - John

Yep. It pleases me that they understand the concept of purchasing something. Each week they get an allowance and I hear them discussing how much more they need to buy something. They occasionally ask me to buy something from "my" money and I tell them no, keep saving, I'm not getting it. Initially they were infuriated and didn't understand why mommy was being mean. Now it just rolls off of them. They shrug and say ok, let me go see how much I need (checking Amazon.com).

Today I bought clothes and shoes for them. My son told me he wasn't expecting any allowance this week because he knows I spent more than his allowance on him. I smiled and told him he would still receive it.

I had 3 kindles om my account (Mine + My Wife & Daughter)
it got messy quick so I put them on their own accounts.

I'd do the shared account for them both, and maybe give them some kind of gift-card allowance for some app/book purchases.
