I've always felt these attempts to actively thwart consumers from hacking their own legally purchased hardware was just a waste of time and resources.

Well, its one thing if you've priced the hardware so as to sell it at a profit. Then you've made your money, no matter what.
It's another thing if you've sold your hardware so as to enable content sales. Then you are screwed if the buyer takes your hardware , hacks it, and goes off to buy stuff from your competitor. Unfortunately, this is what happened to B&N.

As far as I can see, B&N got no benefit whatsoever from being open to rooting. Amazon has no doubt observed this and will take action accordingly. Regardless of their public statements, they will:

* block rooters if they can
* tolerate them where they must
* focus on their strategy (which is to build up their ecosystem, price aggressively , and do great customer service)

The thing is, on people with nook Colors, did they really buy from the competition, or did they just not use it for that many books after rooting it?

Also, given that this is an Amazon device, and they have arguably one of the largest book systems available, I don't think many people will buy from others after rooting.

And that is exactly what Amazon has going for it. As I said in the other thread, the recent announcements and releases by Amazon is a Full Court Press and it definitely puts them on top of the ebook and mobile media game.

You don't need this, yes you do, no you don't...

I lasted about 4 hours and ordered mine late Wednesday afternoon. Good luck.

Amazon shouldn't be worried about people buying books from other people. I have never found a book I was "looking for" cheaper that what Amazon was selling it for.

I have on occasion found "used books," that Amazon didn't have, elsewhere.

As for applications from other sources, well think about how many people are really going to bother to convert their readers and perhaps the apps to get them. A tiny percentage. Maybe a few of those people that hang around blogs and backwater dives and little hide-a-ways down alleys.

Then if those people aren't successful, Amazon's repair will not be under warranty. That is scary for a lot of people.

Truthfully, Amazon could be much more aggressive with book DRM. See how often Apple pushes out updates to stop jailbreaking. Amazon could similarly be aggressive on DRM on new books with constant upgrades. My belief is that they see DRM as necessary to secure the acceptance of publishers, and that they do update occasionally, but that they aren't as aggressive as they could be.

I suspect they will have a similar attitude about jail breaking. They won't go out of there way to encourage it. New software updates will not attempt to make old jailbreaks backwards compatible. But you won't see weekly anti-jailbreak patches.

Just about everyone who rooted the NC said that they installed the Kindle app (sales to Amazon) or Google Market (sales to Google).

Either way, B&N did not generate any sales from it-which was the plan.
