Don't think so, at least for 1st Gen non-Pearl eInk screens; I have a 3 or 4 year old PRS-505 that's been heavily used almost daily since purchased. No sign of any screen deterioration (other than sun fade that's probably been there since Day 1 but I didn't notice till I took it to Cuba last year)

I hope this helps.

Gmail will work! If you can send a book to it and try to download it. I could never do that unless I used sqweezer because of the no new window support.

Here is a tip for using the on-screen keyboard. As you probably know the on-screen keyboard has five tabs in this order:
  • Symbols
  • Lowercase letters
  • Uppercase letters
  • Lowercase letters with critical marks
  • Uppercase letters with critical marks

You can cycle through these tabs using the page buttons for quicker entry. This is a heck of a lot faster than using the 5-way controller.

I picked up a $10 case at Walmart today, pulled out a plastic spine on the inside, attached 4 pieces of velcro to the case and back of the kindle, and boom, workable case. So far my sister has accidentally spilled something on the case and my cat's tried to sit on it 3 times, and it's holding up fine.

Thanks for a great tip! I'm currently using a Case Logic semi-rigid, zippered, padded, travel case that was made for the Sony PRS-300. I also have the neoprene slip case that came with my Sony PRS-300 and it fits well.

I'll have to Google where I got the info, but it was here on MR. I think it was in the Kindle Developers forum. It is pretty easy and quick. It takes longer to find your fonts than to use this method.
Thanks for the confirmation that the margin/font adjustment still works with the Kindle Collections plugin. From what you've posted Amazon doesn't seem to have changed the firmware much in some areas so hopefully the rest of the plugin works ok as well.

Do you use the collections part of the plugin from calibre? It would be interesting to know if that still works the same as well.

Oh, and thanks for the link to the blog about the fonts - interesting to see the plugin linked to from outside MobileRead

Just to clarify, a little off topic.

In spanish:

Padre=Father
Papa=Dad
Papi=Daddy

In latin america, "papi" it is used for a woman to call a man (usually husband/couple). Something like sweetheart or honey.

In Spain, "papi" it is only used for a child to call its father. And if I hear an adult calling "papi" another adult, I would probably think it is ridicolous, stupid and out of context.

Just my two (spanish from Spain) cents

Yes, I know about Collections. They're like the Nook Shelves - too limiting to efficiently handle a large library, too time consuming to configure when one already has all books and magazines stored in a folder structure on the PC. It's much easier to just copy these folders to the reader and use it as-is there.

I must wonder why Amazon and B&N are preventing users from this very common and powerful organization method. It's not like users don't know how to handle folders outside their reader, and for sure the operating systems used by these devices can handle them.

I've never owned a Kindle but the new Kindle 4 is appealing, the only draw back is the fact it doesn't support folders, or epub format. I know, I can convert, but my current reader supports epub and mobi, so I'm spoiled at not having to convert those formats. This looks like a neat ereader though. Thanks for all the info to those that have supplied it

Now, I'm from South America, not PR (lived there 10 years though) , so I know what you mean. I used to call my father, "papi". Again, no offense, it just sounded weird when I read it, giving the case my 1st is Spanish.

Anyway, thanks for the clarification.
Your posting was perfectly fine and I'm sure we all called are fathers papi growing up. I just didn't want someone on the forum using the term improperly.

Here's my Kindle comparison. The screen is sharp, but I can't say it's drastically better than the K3 in my tests. The speed is way better as expected from a faster processor, and maybe the fact that it's shiny and new gives the appearance of a better screen.

Thanks for the picture Zeebra.

Hmmm ... new one looks nice, no doubt. The lack of buttons on the 3G version will be an issue for some customers though. including me. Not sure why Amazon did not add that option. My best bet is saving on manufacturing costs?

I like the wifi only version a lot. But after selling my previous Kindle wifi for getting the 3G one, not sure if I'm ready to give the 3G away , again ...

Zeebra, your Kindle 4 text appears aligned at the right margin, the Kindle 3 does not. Is that a different setting that you chose or is the default different between the two? I prefer the alignment of the Kindle 3, it appears less crowded. Just wondering if that was configurable. Thanks.

Yeah sorry, the kindle 3 i re-set cause i'm selling it to a friend so it has default settings. The kindle 4 I used the Calibre-plugin hack to make the margins more narrow. Also the spacing is tighter on the 4. I guess I should have set the text settings the same to show an even comparison.
