Naughy, naughty!
![]() It's not that bad. Not yet. Main thing is B&N has to avoid trying to answer everything Amazon does; they can't and trying *will* break them. Their business is books. Amazon's business is everything. B&N needs to focus on books and on breaking the *other* epub players. B&N doesn't need to be top ebook vendor to survive---they just need to be the top epub reader vendor. Big difference. "I don't need to be faster than the bear, I just need to be faster than you." |

Both the NC and the Kindle Fire do not have the specs that are required for the Android Market. I hope we will get apps like Netflix and Overdrive. But remember that B&N does not create the apps. Developers/companies have to submit their NC apps to B&N. If they do not develop a NC version, there is not much B&N can do. |

The SO K4 are already up to delivery on November 21. I believe that is one week after the original release date. I would say that they are selling well. Many of the folks I know with the SO Kindles are enjoying them. They say that the ads are not a problem since they are on the screen savers and on the menu screen only.
I have a feeling that the $79 and $99 K4 are going to sell very well. BN is going to have to cut its price on the Nook Touch and the Color if they want to compete. The silly thing is that this is now essentially a price war because the readers all do pretty much the same thing. The only real difference is the format and most people don't care about that. |

I have a nook color and it is a fine device - out a year ahead of Amazon no less.
The problem is and has always been .... lack of Apps when it runs stock. I'm tired of messing around with the boot cards and installing other flavors of Android on the thing. I want to take a new one out of the box, turn it on, and have all the options I need. The need to respond either by getting apps into their own store or allowing access to the Android marketplace or I won't be back. As for the eInk readers, they are going to have to drop their price. They lost the big advantage there when Amazon got Library access. I don't say either of those with any glee. When Barnes and Noble first introduced their nook I'm one of those who predicted almost immediate failure. A bookstore trying to sell tech? HaHaHaHaHa!!!! But, they have shocked and amazed the hell out of me with what they've managed to accomplish ... ahead of Amazon in many areas. But they are fighting a beast and I'm not sure how many tricks they have left to pull. |

I would be very disappointed if Sony or Nook or Kobo went away. Competition is a good thing. At the very least, it forces Amazon to stay on its toes and improve its product. More importantly, it gives me an alternative if I decide I am not happy with something that Amazon is doing.
Competition is good. |

Even Kindle owners don't want this Kindle generation to be the last. Competition is good but I disagree that B&N needs to open up to Google's market. Their survival depends on skimming as much revenue off each gadget sold. Giving up the vig on their app store runs counter to that. There's a reason they run their own appstore (and Amazon, too). Netflix and Hulu? Maybe. Would it bring $money$? Per-user royalties, maybe? Vudu, probably. It is important to remember that the Fire isn't aimed at the NC, per-se; it is aimed at the broader media consumption market. And NC was intended as a color reader first and foremost. Competition is good but competing just to compete is bad; lots of companies have commited suicide trying to compete in markets they had no business getting into. And trying to match Fire is a losing game. One word says it all: Silk. There are maybe 4 companies on the planet that can do a Silk browser. Amazon and Microsoft for sure (they've done it) Google and Apple, probably. Sony? Maybe, maybe not. B&N? Uh-uh; totally out of their realm. Try reading this to appreciate what it's taken Amazon to get here: http://www.businessweek.com/printer/...-09282011.html Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. B&N is too close to disaster to bet the company on peripheral hopes. Last edited by fjtorres; 09-28-2011 at 03:04 PM. |

I think B&N will need to do an ad version like Amazon in order to get the price down on their eReaders. They've got to be competitively priced or they really could go out of business. People like good deals, and they'll go wherever the good deals are.

I am not sure it will be easy for BN to do an Ad version like Amazon. Amazon has connections with a ton of different retailers and stores. It is easier for them to get agreement on ads and products.

I guess that no ones want B&N to disappear. Even though I use and like a Kindle, I spend basically all my weekends on the B&N close to home.
But the thing is, this is about money and business. Like another silly thread I read few days ago here, "Amazon is nobody's friend", and that also applies to B&N. I think B&N needs to focus on content! They won't be able to compete with hardware or prices, and if they do, they are crazy! People stick to a tablet because its online content , customer support and price. No ones want to pay $200.00 bucks for a tablet when you have just a few apps to enjoy or download. |

Don't you think that rather depends on the individual owner? I use my iPad almost exclusively for watching video and browsing the web. I really don't give a damn about how many apps it has available for it.

So why should this not work for B&N? And it is probably the only opion in they want to compete with Amazons lower prices. |

But most people get a tablet because the available content, available apps. And of course, they also check price, operating system, weight, etc. Even some websites now detect the Os and ask you to go and install the free app. The apps have been designed for a better customer experience, or, should be. So they look better, in most cases, than the browser version. |

But if you go online and compare B&N stocks vs Amazon (over a year) Amazon's went up while B&N down. So overall, B&N is not doing well. |
