I had my NC first, then my ST, then my sis in law and her daughter bought Kindles, my hubby bought an ipad and also uses his iphone. A girl at work has a sony, they are the only ones I have ever seen. I think this relates more to the paucity of ebook sites for Australians than not wanting the tech.

First of all, I use Fastpass, so my waits in lines are greatly reduced. Secondly, I like to travel as light as possible. I save my Kindle-reading for back in the room or at the airport.

Using expensive gadgets invites thieves, unfortunately... I only use the reader at home or closed places (office, waiting room etc)

Using expensive items only at home or in closed spaces seems strange to me. What about your car, jewelery, a nice coat or even your pet.
And trust me people will rob you of your jewelry any where. And even your home is not safe if someone wants something. I just had a man in my store who's girl friend stole his Rolex and other expensive jewelry from his home safe. At today's gold prices that was tens of thousands of dollars.
I carry my Nook Color everywhere I go. If it is stolen that is what my insurance is for.

hahaha I lost my pet several times too lol. I have never seen people using e reader in public places until now. (my place anyway, but E-reader device is not big here. People tend to choose tablets, and even that is seldom seen)

Caution is the key I suppose.

I see people reading all the time and always mention MobileRead to them for info and freebies. Most of them are already aware. I tell them that I'm DixieGal and to say "Hi" next time they log in. So far, no one has.

The place where I have seen the most e-readers in the wild is the gym. I know that's weird but I see quite a few people, usually women, reading them while on the elliptical or treadmill. I use it at the gym myself sometimes. I haven't really see any on mass transit (but I live in NW Ohio so maybe a of transit users just don't use them) or even bookstores.

I saw very few for the longest time, and I too wondered why I didn't see them all over the place if they were selling so well.

However in the last several months I have seen more and more of them on my daily bus commute. One day last week, the people on either side of me and a person across the aisle all had e-readers.

As far as I can tell, most appear to be Kindles.

I do see some iPads, but usually seems as if people are accessing online content as opposed to reading books.

Well ever since I started looking into ebooks and bought my Nook Color last Christmas, I have been noticing ereaders in a lot of places. Traveling with the airlines was the first thing I thought of. I see quite a few people waiting by their gate in the airport or while flying that are using ereaders. Other than traveling, I see people using ereaders in cafes/coffee houses quite frequently. Around malls and shopping centers too, usually seems to be someone will be waiting outside reading while their spouse, kids, etc. are in the stores shopping. I have seen a couple people using them in the gym while on treadmill/elliptical.

Oh almost forgot, around the college campus. I'm a full time student and while I don't see a lot of students with ereaders there are a couple.

I find it hard to notice any ereaders when I am out places because I usually have my nose buried in mine.

P.S. I do see more and more. Several people at work carry/use them regularly (Sony, Nook, Kindle) and I've see them in the wild as well quite often here in Denver.

I'm stoic when it comes to reading - I'll suffer for (someboy else's) art!

I've seen lots of e-readers out in the real world. On planes, by the pool, at the beach, etc.

Also look at how many people take books period out in public. I think most people are ashamed to be thought of as readers.
