Plenty of epubs that show up perfectly in Sigil and Calibre display only a "?" when displayed by the reader, particularly those with letter such as "ō" or "ž". I have also made the experience that often the epub doesn't show the cover while it is shown perfectly once converted into lrf.
Maybe this is somehow the fault of the publishers but I don't see it as my job to rework epubs just to have them displayed properly by the reader. |

Isn't possible to embed fonts in the epub file?
Anyway, words like rōnin or the well known philosopher Slavoj Žižek are hardly so exotic that I cannot expect them to be displayed properly. |

It's not really a matter of how "exotic" the words are. I could equally say that the Chinese author "孫子" is sufficiently well-known that my reader should render his name correctly, but if it's not designed for the Chinese market, the characters aren't going to be in its font, and it won't display them. I have to use the transliterated form of his name. "Sun Tzu", instead. Likewise, many reading devices sold for Western European and US markets don't contain the accented letters used in Central European languages.

I wonder why that should be acceptable. The manufacturers should better get this sorted out if they want to lure as customers prolific readers with a willingness to spend substantial amounts of money for books.
Well reputed British publishing houses such as Penguin may get away with making a mistake in about every second word whenever they venture into printing something in German, yet an expensive book with lots of unwanted "?" is just too obviously defective to be acceptable. |

If you come across a retail ePub that fails to display non-West European characters then you should complain loudly to the publisher. |

Bad news: the Sony T1 doesn't implement partial screen refresh like the latest Kobo or Nook Touch => black screen transition on each page turn instead of one out of six (or whatever you choose in reader's parameters).

Yes, some people would find that to be bad news, and others would find it to be good news.

I consider it good news because that should mean no ghosting. I wonder if it could be a Preference somewhere to adjust that parameter between 1 - 6 pages. That would satisfy everyone.

That's good news to me. I do y like the way it is implemented on the Nook. Too jarring when you get to the sixth page. Plus the others had to do a firmware update to make it variable since people were annoyed.

That's a minor thing, and can always be remedied with a software update.

The first thing I did with my Kobo Touch was change the "every 6 pages" refresh to a refresh every page.
I feel the "every 6 page refresh" to be a sloppy and annoying marketing ploy. |

That is a GOOD news. The screen of the kobo and nook does not look good with the ghosting between total refresh.
