I used to teach part time in Junior college here in CA and I often allowed my students to create a cheat sheet. Basically I allowed them to have one 3x5 card with all the formulas and other data for a test. By the time the student spent the effort to generate the card they knew the material and didn't usually even need to refer to the card during the test. It actually worked well.

When I was studying Miscrosoft and Cisco I was taking notes of everything I read sometimes in my own words. It helped me a lot.

Yeah, that's always a hazard: new words. Probably just as well we do have standardized spellings of words, and punctuation, and grammar, etc., etc. But looking on the bright side: you can learn a new word.
