I think Poohbear had one of them right and just needed to keep going.

I'm pretty sure that patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel, but not too sure that marriage (or love) is the triumph of hope over experience, and that a critic is a wretch who supports with insolence and is paid with flattery is a complete guess.

I think that the last one was sponsors - wasn't it some kind of thinly veiled dig at the nobleman that had sponsored his dictionary? Or am I misremembering?
Edit; patrons, I think is a better word than sponsors. Last edited by Bilbo1967; 09-23-2011 at 01:52 PM. |

Tom and Bilbo, you have it quite well covered between the two of you.
![]() "The triumph of hope over experience" - second marriage "The last refuge of a scoundrel" - patriotism "A wretch who supports with insolence, and is paid with flattery" - a patron. |

I am currently watching the qualifying session for tomorrow's Singapore Grand Prix.
What is unique about the Singapore Grand Prix? |

OK - now for something completely different.
Sunset Boulevard, Billy Wilder's classic 1950 noir film, is one of the most highly honored American films, and the source of many unforgettable lines. Writer and producer Charles Brackett maintained that he and Wilder never considered anyone except Gloria Swanson for the role of Norma Desmond. Wilder disagreed, and the casting history of Sunset Blvd was quite convoluted. 1. What pairings of actresses & younger actors did Wilder consider? 2. Swanson was nominated for an Academy Award in 1950, but lost to whom? 3. In those pre-CGI days, how did they film the corpse of Joe Gillis (William Holden) floating in Norma Desmond's pool in the film's opening scenes? Stretch those classic Noir movie memories! |

No clue. I'll take a wild guess at Bette Davis (but for what movie?) for the Oscar winner. And I'll also guess that they floated the body of the actor that lost the (vilolent?) argument about who got to play the lead role.

Surprisingly - Bette Davis was nominated that year as well - and lost too! For All About Eve!
