The cable is simply a standard micro-USB cable, and can be purchased anywhere. There's certainly no need to buy the expensive Amazon-branded version.

tru story, my co worker who owns a kindle uses my nook classic charger all the time. just a basic standard micro usb you can get for peanuts on line.

I like my kindle!

Pros:
-Love the battery life. Love the sleep time battery life even better.

-lots of cheaper accessories. (got an Eco-Nique Hemp cover for 15.+gbp. quite cheap compared to kindle covers. little disappointed that inside part was leathery after-all)

-easily chargeable.
-No touchscreen makes life easier in some respects.
-excellent B/W clarity. Have a KDX 1st gen and the difference is marked.
-Duokan and other dev hacks make it extensible.

Cons: No real deal breakers.
-Sometimes accidentally press the page buttons, like when shifting my hand etc.,
-format support.
-The body feels just a little fragile. A more solid body would be good.
-Amazon apps not available globally. Which is bad because the price is same for everyone (if not more for the rest of the world).

*Sigh* The last of the bright shiny touchscreens were discontinued a year ago. The Sony and Kobo touchscreens now use infrared beams to register touches. Their screens are identical to the Kindle 3.

Pros:
Amazon customer service is responsive
Supported worldwide

Cons:
Clunky keyboard and wide bezel add unnecessary size
Not a touch screen
Locks you in to the Amazon store for popular books
White plastic
Very few library books currently available (That's a pro for those of us who do read library books. If Kindle supported them, there'd be a lot more competition for titles.)

As you can see from the responses, there are widely divergent opinions on things like keyboards and touch screens. I would not buy a reader without them. Others who have responded to this thread wouldn't buy a reader with them.

I meant compared to purebred tablets like the iPad. The Kindle just looks like a book, the iPad will never achieve that effect with its display technology. And I (personal opinion) find the Kindle-technology more eye-friendly.

Well, I didn't want to take any chance. Plus, I was also referring to the skins, leather covers etc.

There are dozens - probably hundreds - of third party Kindle covers available, ranging from virtually free to ridiculously expensive. Set your own price point.
