DRM is awful. And virtually useless. And it is, if anything, holding back mass adoption of ebooks.

I feel the same way. Edited to add: That goes for any book publishing company. If I can't remove the DRM, I won't buy from them. Carol Last edited by sadievan; 09-23-2011 at 12:52 PM.

Don't worry about it, mr. worm. It really not a big deal. Get yerself an ereader. Get calibre. Get some tips on installing plugins. Enjoy some books. The only reason I would remove drm is so I can adjust indent and paragraph spacing after I buy a book. Hypothetically. Last edited by OtterBooks; 09-24-2011 at 01:40 PM. |

As if on cue, a new thread and discussion on this very subject on Teleread. And the kicker...Adobe DRM costs the ebook vendor about 25 cents a copy and is...actually pretty useless. |

It's a good thing that indie authors looking for an audience to go no DRm. Best selling authors are in a completely different place. Ms. Rowling is going with social DRm, but she may take big losses over this. We will see.

She won't take any losses. She might not make as much profit (assuming that every copy out there that wasn't paid for is an actual lost sale, VERY unlikely), but there won't be any loss.

Libraries are starting to offer books without DRM. I just borrowed one two days ago and I can't return it early so I guess it will never expire either. The lending period is two weeks, so I guess the library will wait two weeks before lending it again.

Certain DRM types don't have variable expiration post encoding. Basically, it can only expire at the set time, and not before, so no early returns. Try opening the book in Calibre. By default (IE, if you don't have the third party DRM stripper plugin), Calibre will tell you if it can or cannot open a file due to DRM.

I know it's not DRM because I got a choice of formats - Adobe EPUB and PDF or Open EPUB and PDF. It also wasn't a .ascm file I have to open, it was downloaded as .epub.

That's not "borrowing" a book; that's giving you a book to keep forever. Unless the book is in the public domain, this seems very unlikely.

What I have issue with is the fact that Amazon owns Mobipocket and yet unless I break the DRM on the books I bought from Mobipocket I would either have to buy new copies of the same book in their Kindle format or just not read those books on my ereader. So I agree DRM is more of a headache than a help.

i never really minded drm until i had to "unlock" all my books when i got a replacement kindle. simply being able to transfer the files that were already on my computer would have been too easy i guess....

Why didn't you remove the DRM as you got the books? That's what most of us do, and it makes life an awful lot easier.
