Well, until anjirlly comes by, try this one:
"I am a young man," said I, "and I ask your advice. Advise me as you would your son. My friend fairly lost this money, after having fairly gained a far greater sum of yours; can I accept it back again? Would that be the right part for me to play? Whatever I do, you can see for yourself it must be hard upon a man of any pride." Spoken by the hero in chapter 23 of 30 in this popular 1886 novel. |

Sorry - forgot to take a book to work so that I could enter a quote during a break.
English translation of a 1984 book by an East European emigre. "Cemeteries in Bohemia are like gardens. The graves are covered with grass and colorful flowers. Modest tombstones are lost in the greenery. When the sun goes down, the cemetery sparkles with tiny candles. It looks as though the dead are dancing at a children's ball. Yes, a children's ball, because the dead are as innocent as children. No matter how brutal life becomes, peace always reigns in the cemetery. Even in wartime, in Hitler's time, in Stalin's time, through all occupations. When she felt low, she would get into the car, leave Prague far behind, and walk through one or another of the country cemeteries she loved so well. Against the backdrop of blue hills, they were as beautiful as a lullaby. "For Franz a cemetery was an ugly dump of stones and bones." |

I love this quote, so while I'm clueless thus far, I'm looking forward to learning the source.

The only other East European author I know of is Milan Kundera, but I've not read any of his works.

I've been reading through this thread, and hoping I could guess one. I'm throwing out a wild guess here, but is the quote from The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera?
(I've never read it; it's just the only Eastern European title I know of.) |

You've got it! The quote is from a section entitled "Dictionary of Misunderstood Words," and I love how concretely it shows the false equivalence of words that are "easy" to translate.
