As to the original question, I don't particularly like Apple and reside more in the MS camp when it comes to preferred suppliers. However, I was a bit philosophical about Apple not supporting flash as I liked the idea of it being replaced with open standards HTML5.

At the same time, I did think it was rather stupid of Apple to remove flash as I thought it would harm the browsing experience. I don't know if that's really played out though, so I'm less inclined to say that MS are stupid for following suit.

As a whole, I don't think that a bunch of people have switched to HTML5, but I don't hear much complaints about no flash on iOS.

Personally, I don't mind Flash being replaced by HTML5. Flash is horrible under Linux (I've had youtube videos bring an AMD64 3800+ with a gig and a half of RAM crawling along), a pain in embedded environments due to Macromedia and Adobe lagging years behind on the versions allowed in embedded environments, and just plain crappy in general.

The above noted, especially when it comes to embedded (which is part of why Apple didn't add flash support), I understand why iOS has no flash support. Why would you want something that is inefficient, and not always compatible with things on the web (the latest version of Flash Lite, the embedded version, is based on five year old Flash 9, despite the number of Flash 10 apps out there (Flash 10 has been available for 3 years now)).

Probably simply because it's self-selecting. I do most of my web browsing on my iPhone. Clearly, I would not have bought an iPhone if Flash were necessary for my web browsing; I'd have bought something like an Android phone instead. Everyone knows that iOS doesn't support Flash, so people who need Flash don't buy iOS devices.

Plus also gone are the days where most websites were completely done in flash. It used to be, so many website you couldn't use if you couldn't use flash, and then they started implementing design protocols to assist with the handicapped. Entirely flash websites kinda are useless to blind people, since the tools for blind interpretation can't handle full on flash. Same thing with tables based websites going the way of the dodo.

I think that the real answer to this question is also the real answer behind Steve Jobs’ decision to ban Flash: follow the money. Cross-platform, in-browser RIAs extending the universal browser to deliver rich and protected apps and content directly between producer and consumer aren’t a legacy problem to be solved; rather, they are a leading-edge, cloud-based threat to the platform-dependent empires that Microsoft and Apple have built up, and to the App Store and in-app content empires that they are currently building.

Keep the lid on the universal, browser-based user experience by killing off the in-browser RIA technologies and restricting the web to HTML5 and you get to deliver the full RIA experience outside the browser via your iOS and Metro apps, and via your platform-specific App Stores and in-app subscriptions. Not only is your all-important operating system and software ecosystem protected from third-party, cloud-based, cross-platform alternatives; you also get to take 30% of all paid-for app content, with no possibility of competition within your platform.

Look at it like this and Microsoft’s decision to effectively sacrifice its in-browser Silverlight vision makes absolute sense. The RIA vision behind Flash and Silverlight in which the web delivers on its full potential as a cross-platform, universal, open and truly rich connection direct between producer and consumer is a wonderful dream, but this is business.

Except the things mentioned are not universal and open...

I'm hopeful that this will mean the end to annoying, slow, and useless Flash intros on Web sites.

Nah. They'll just be replaced with annoying, slow, useless and rendered differently by every single browser HTML5-based intros.

Overall I think this is a good thing, and I actually appreciate anyone taking a step forward (which is a painful) in getting rid of Flash. HTML5 is a lot more efficient and technically safer for the time being, and will be more accessible than Flash will ever be.

I've personally dealt with Adobe along with other team leads, developers, ect. and I can just say they really could make flash better, efficient, and safer. Adobe just doesn't want to at all. They are difficult, and arrogant in helping their own tech. to work better with operating systems. So now Adobe is working on a Flash to HTML5 application instead. Very sad.

I really like Win 8 so far. Other than the touch interface being a pain to use with mouse only in a virtual machine. But that isn't surprising.

I don't remember Vista reviews being negative before it came out officially.
