According to the announcement over on the amazon kindle forums, the library lending is 'part of' the update to 3.3 (no word on what else, if anything, is included). The same announcement says that library lending is enabled only for Seattle so far as a final beta.

Looks like I need to uninstall all my hacks and get ready for an update on my K2. What is the most recent version of the K2 software?

Damn. The extent that Amazon will go to to avoid allowing E-pub.

Question updating with no wi-fi service just 3G

will my kindle update automatically since I don't have wifi service? Or would I need to download any update and do it through usb? I'm still on 3.1

I understand that I won't be able to have any library books go directly to my Kindle but will have to load them through usb. True?

I've seen some posts over on Amazon's boards where people downloaded library books and they were still at 3.1. As long as you download through Wi-Fi, you're fine. The service seems to be going active in numerous places since Amazon made the official announcement this morning.

No need. There isn't going to be an update for K2—at least none is needed for library lending.

Amazon Library announcement 09-21-2011

Kindle Books Now Available at Local Libraries
by Kindle Editors on 09/21/2011

We’re excited to tell you that starting today, Kindle and Kindle app customers can borrow Kindle books from more than 11,000 libraries in the United States. When you borrow a Kindle book from your local library, you’ll find all the unique features you love about Kindle books:

- Whispersync automatically syncs your margin notes, highlights and bookmarks – even once you return a Kindle book to your library, we’re going to back up your notes and bookmarks, so the next time you check out the book (or if you decide you want to buy the Kindle book) your notes and bookmarks will be there, waiting for you.

- Read Everywhere – when you check out a Kindle book from your local library, you can read it on your Kindles and your free Kindle apps for the most popular devices and platforms.

- Real Page Numbers – our page numbers match the page numbers in print books, so you can easily reference and cite passages and read alongside others in your book club or class.

- Facebook and Twitter Integration – Share meaningful passages with friends and family with built-in Twitter and Facebook integration.

- Wireless delivery – Your Kindle library books can be delivered via Wi-Fi, so there’s no need to transfer books to your Kindle via USB

To learn more about borrowing Kindle books from your local library, go to: www.amazon.com/kindle/publiclibraries. To find out if your library will have Kindle books available, visit your library’s website.

We love libraries – they’re a great way to discover new authors and genres, so we’re excited to hear what you think of getting Kindle books at your local library. Let us know!

  • go to your library's OverDrive page and login
  • search for the book you want
  • select Kindle Book
  • click Add to Cart
  • click Proceed to Checkout
  • select lending period (7-14-21 days)
  • click Confirm Check Out
  • click Get for Kindle
  • that launches an Amazon page - Your Public Library Loan
  • select Deliver to option
  • click Get library book
The book is then sent to your Kindle or Kindle app and downloads the next time you connect it to wifi.
Good instructions, but you stopped too soon!!! My biggest gripe with OverDrive and Adobe and now OverDrive and Amazon is that they don't explain how to return an ebook. Please these steps to your post.

*read the ebook
*when finished return to Manage My Kindle in your computer's browser
*click on Actions to the right of the ebook you have checked out
*click on Return This Book

In this case, it's not so much a case of avoidance of a particular format for no good reason as it is a case of what is simpler and more economical for Amazon.

Amazon already has the book files on their servers in the .azw format. Why pay a fee to Adobe for its DRMed epub file if Amazon already has a copy of its own?

The ability to save library book annotations is unique to Amazon, isn't it? I doubt that the format has anything to do with this feature since plenty of epub readers allow annotations, so the big difference seems to be that the books are coming from Amazon's server rather than Overdrive's. Again, it makes more sense to Amazon to just use the files that it already has in its possession.

I posted those instructions in a different thread last night. But I'll modify this one to make it complete.

Im running v3.1 with the screensaver hacks...I was able to borrow a library book from the Broward County library system (Florida)...so i dont think version 3.3 is necessary for that (at least in my case)

Same here. Maybe there will be a bug at the end of the lend period?
