Oh, well. After temps in the 100 degree range followed by downpours from Irene and Lee (and then my back going out worse than its been for a decade) it may finally be time to put the Jetbook Lite down, go outside, and put on the Creative Zen mp3 player (hearing music -- perhaps the only advantage to an old fashioned motor-less push mower).

Egad! I too use a motor-less push mower! Can't stand the uproar of a gasoline model! Not to mention the fumes.

A few years ago I wanted one just for the exercise. If I had one now, I'd want to hire someone to push it.

It would be a perfect spring day and warm. Except there is an inversion and all the fires to the west of us have caused a smoky haze to descend upon us. I have a sore froat and coughing (wheezy) No amount of athsma medicine will fix. Now I am wondering if the plane will be OK to see where it is going tommorrow.

The house is closed up and I am sure the towels on the line will smell funny when I get them off. Ah well maybe another cup of coffee.

I recently saw an advertisement in 'Mother Earth News' for a push mower that utilizes some sort of flywheel storing up energy to make the pushing much easier. Of course, that energy has to come from somewhere...

Thankfully, we've received 1.2 inches total yesterday and today. That's the first rain in a long time. Hopefully, we'll get some more tomorrow and Tuesday.

It was an absolutely cracking day here today, too! (I have no idea what that means exactly, but it just sounds so wonderful. ) Fall temperatures and breezy. This is the time of year that I remember why I love living somewhere with 4 distinct seasons. Just when you get really tired of the one you're in, it all changes and gives you a new appreciation of the next season.

I believe you're speaking of the the Fiskars' Momentum Reel Mower:

It doesn't use a flywheel, but rather a 'flywheel-like' innovation they call "InertiaDrive technology" (see "Fiskars Momentum Reel Mower Doubles Your Effort with Flywheel Action" at treehugger.com). It looks nice, and it probably is one of the best non-motorized mowers out there, but as Consumer Reports says:
Quote:
As a rule, we’ve found reel mowers to be a real chore to push, even just to lop off the top inch of our test grass. The Fiskars is no exception despite claims of "extra cutting power" that reduces force "by 30 percent in long grass."
It would be nice to hear from someone who owns one.

No, it's not!!!! Ask me how I know... I did it. I "borrowed" a goat from my (then) boss to help with the large lot we used to live on. It didn't like the grass, but it LOVED my rosebushes and the seatbelts in the car..... and it could escape from any collar/tether device I could come up with. Try chasing a goat at 6 a.m. and see what your neighbors say....

You need to be careful to get an animal who cuts the grass, instead of tearing it out. If I remember correctly, cows cut and sheep tear away. I don't know about goats, but they probably eat the grass, the roots, the soil and the trees too.

See? We cross-posted but that's what I meant, more or less (the seat belts? ).
