Question Can the Simple Touch open these two docs?

Can someone please try these two documents on the Simple Touch? If they don't work, it'll be a deal-killer.

* Can you open up this doc and page through it at a reasonable speed?
http://www.archive.org/download/stan...03bailrich.pdf

(Doc is Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture Vol 3, expired copyright, from Archive.org. I want to test a large PDF.)

* Can you browse this HTML tree? Start with how\index.html (I removed all PDFs)
http://www.mediafire.com/?a4lzuoe73bzs5w8

(This is a download of the National Center for Home Food Preservation at www.uga.edu. I want to test HTML trees downloaded with wget on Windows.)

The PDF can be displayed, but the nook str reflows the text and removes the images, making it a very poor experience.

If you reduce the font size to the 2nd smallest, it displays the full page (including images) without reflow, but the text is too small to be readable.

Short answer: 6" eInk is not the answer for PDFs of this size.

Regarding the HTML tree, the nook does not know how to read those files and gives you an error when you click on them.

None of the ebook-only readers are very good at PDF files and none are really meant to be browsers.

An Android tablet or an iPad are probably your only real choices if the these are your restrictions.

Hmm I was considering the Nook STR because it's Android... you sure a "normal" tablet will fly?

You could root the STR and install a better PDF app, like ezPDF, but the fact that it is eInk makes it less than ideal, as you get extra flashing when scrolling the page.

If you want to read A4 or 8.5x11" PDFs, you need a large screen eInk reader (10" at a minimum) or a tablet. I read all my PDF technical docs on the nook color, and leave leisure reading for the nook str.

Flashing isn't really a deal-killer if ezPDF will work. I suppose the HTML tree should work on a rooted SRT.

I can try both. I tried to download the file at work, but it takes too long. I have a scanned "Metals handbook" (190 Mb for 830 pages), quite heavy for its size (a regular metals handbook with 1100 pages, is only 20 mb), that I'll believe will be enough to emulate a heavy file - I'll open it with ezpdf. And I'll download the other file and try to check it with opera browser.

Yep that's what I'm looking for. I have many scanned PDFs, that's one of the largest.

And indeed it did open the two docs. Sideways was a little better using ezpdf, it took a couple of seconds to finish rendering each page, but it worked fine - considering it was a 196mb file with 800 plus pages.. Regarding the HTML, I used Astro for finding the file and used a "DB HTML viewer" in the option list, and I managed to go down the tree and back. Worked like a charm. But only on rooted nook.
