Rooting with SD card
Has anyone used the dual boot SD card to root the Nook Color. How is it working out. Any problems.
When loading stuff do you load to the SD card to to the NC itself. I keep debating getting a Nook Color (that or maybe the new kindle tablet) but would need the Kindle app. Carol |

A lot of people dual book with the SD Card with no problems.
I did that for a while, but enjoyed the interface of the manual nooter so I stopped. You can still put books on the main memory as well as SD, so you can choose where you want them ![]() I love the Nook Color, it's a great investment! |

No, I'm not rooted permanently, I can re-install the original firmware anytime.
The screen is awesome, one of it's best qualities. I would just go get one ![]() |

I'd certainly recommend the SD card route for unlocking the NC, especially if you are not familiar with Android/rooting.
Everything is done on the SD card, and the main memory is not affected by the unlocking process, so if something goes wrong, or you just decide you want to go back to the original firmware, you just pop the SD card out and reboot, and are right back to the original setup. |

Got a NC two days ago. Followed instructions on creating an SD card that runs Android using the boot to SD first capability. Looks like I was mostly sucessful but am now trying to learn the Android OS features to see if the effort was worth it.
![]() So far I have not been able to load any apps as the latest build of CM7 seems to no longer support the Reboot-restore function which is needed to expand the .zip files such as Gapps. I can't install individual app like Google maps as Google says i don't have a registered device No instructions found on how to find any usefull apps that can be installed from Market Apps either. Since I can't install any free apps I am not going to buy the app I really wanted because it may not install either. So far about all I can see as a plus is I can read email from my Gmail account. Composing email is slow and there is no auto complete from my Gmail contacts list. Glad I didn't "Root" my NC as so far running CM7 is no real plus. |

It worked fine for me. It may take a few goes to work out how long you have to hold the n button down for to trigger it though.

Just to give you a little firmer foundation, "rooting" refers to gaining root access, or super-user permissions, in an Android operating system. It's equivalent to being Administrator on a Windows machine. ManualNooter is a rooting process, which makes some additional adjustments so that the Android Market will see the device as compatible. If you root, you're looking to keep your current operating system, but have more control over it, so that you can, for instance, install third-party apps (like the Market). It's a series of changes you make to the existing software on the device.
The "dual boot SD card" ("dual boot" also confuses it with another process, but we'll leave that for now) is not rooting. You're running completely different, custom software (Android speak: custom ROM) from the SD card without doing anything to the software on the device. The custom ROM will have root access (to itself!), but you do not have to root the stock software to install or run it. A third option is replacing the stock software with a custom ROM. SD installs work quite well, and are advisable as a first step, but custom ROMs are built to actually run on the device, and in general tend to be more stable and perform better that way (though a good SD setup can be quite comparable), as well as freeing your entire SD card for storage (or to run a second or third or fourth ROM ![]() Quote:

If you're having trouble booting into recovery, there are multiple methods.
Of course, you must have the gapps.zip package on the boot partition of your SD card for any of these methods to serve your purpose. Also, verygreen's update/recovery utility can flash by quite quickly--in CM7, check Settings > Accounts & Sync to see if you have the option to set up a google account before you assume the package didn't install. ETA: Also, when you say "latest build of CM7," do you mean nightly build 177? The last stable build, 7.0.3, is quite out of date and may have issues with either verygreen's card, the latest gapps, or both. Last edited by taosaur; 09-16-2011 at 06:56 AM. |

Thanks, taosaur - yours is the first description of "rooting" I could actually understand.

I ended up re partioning and formating the SD card then followed http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1000957 exactly. I think previously I missed or skipped a step or two. This time I made sure to follow exactly. The first thing I noted was I could now Reboot to Recovery. Doing that seemed to be what I needed. Have dl and installed a couple of apps so feeling much better. Now all I need to do is learn the Android OS and commands and icons. Know if a video or post "Android for Dummies" I can follow? |

The N2A card is the thing that is pushing me towards the NC plus it's just a cool ereader/tablet at an affordable price. But I think I'll wait to see if an NC2 comes out this fall. Three ereaders in a year (Kindle, Nook Touch, and then an NC) might be pushing my luck with my wife, though. LOL
