The latter. It would be worth giving brief though to the two words, and seeing if you can get anywhere from both words. For instance, there's not many words you can get to from archaeopteryx, so that would be a bad choice.

But you don't need to check that a chain exists first. That's part of the fun. We've had to abandon at least one pair.

And what, pray tell, is an "archaeopteryx"? More importantly, how do you pronounce that? (And here I flattered myself to think my English was respectable...)
