Why not? It seems to me to be a clever thing to do.

As much as this would annoy me if I used the nook STR, I have to say from B&N's POV, this was a pretty smart move. IA with tompe. It's going to force a lot more people to buy more e-books from B&N instead of buying from other stores. For B&N this isn't a bad thing.

Did not know you had that type of connections to be so privy as to why BN has decided to separate the two.

You act as if someone is forced to denounce their citizenship.

You get alot of space for sideloaded, 240 MB that's a good chunk of books. and if you need more space you have the option to either utilize the built in archiving system or take advantage of the provided SD card slot

You talk as if you are forced to commit treason. And again with you it's only about Sony and pimping them so please cut the charade OK

at least be honest with your motives.

And what are your motives? Anytime anyone says anything critical about your beloved Nook, you start in with the insults.

Everyone should be allowed to discuss the pros and cons of any and all ereaders available without being subjected to abuse.

JS likes his Sony, you like your Nook. We can discuss both devices without getting personal about it.

Because B&N get full control over the available space and can handle it becoming full in a good way and in a way that is good for the customer. You can also do smart thing with integrity checks and so on when you know that the use cannot remove or change files on the partition.

As someone who just purchased the Nook STR as his first dedicated e-reader over a month ago, I can say that the stink being made about the partitioning of internal space for purchased vs. side-loaded books is a total non-issue. I too was initially put off by the fact that so "little" space was reserved for side-loaded books, but put into practice it hasn't been noticeable in the least. I had a cheap 4GB MicroSD card that I put in it, and I simply put all of my side-loaded books onto the SD card. I have probably about 100 or so side-loaded books on the device so far, and having intially put them all in the main memory, they hardly made a dent in the amount of space available. This includes a few manga graphic novels as well as regular text-only EPUBs. People with much more extensive libraries than I have so far may run into issues, but really, anyone with that size of a library is better off investing in a cheap SD card anyway.

As to the one who is complaining about side-loaded books not appearing under the "Books" section of the library, I'm not sure what you're doing wrong, but all of my side-loaded books appear in there, including my .cbr and .cbz graphic novel files. Do you use Calibre for library management and syncing instead of the Nook PC software? If not, I highly recommend you do so.

No, they do not. They appear if you select "all". But this I noticed was a very good thing. I put thousands of books on an SD card and then it was very good to be able to select "Books" and only see the books on the device. You could then get a priority among the books. The side-loaded books on the device appear under "Books".

Hold on, are you saying Nook STR support cbr/cbz or is this some kind of conversion process you running inside of Calibre to convert them to a format that the Nook recognizes?

If you load your books under "\My Files\Books" they also appear under Books. While I'm not a big fan of the Libraries feature, I think that would be the suggested way to implement the priority you want to assign to your books. Doing this also allows you to quickly add or remove books from a library without having to use a computer.

Why not just forget about the actual memory size and only consider the available space?

For 139 USD you get a Nook with 240 MB of available space. Some users might consider this to be enough
For 145 USD you get a Nook with more than 4 GB of available space by adding an SD card.

If 5 USD are enough to put you off the purchase then by all means don't buy it, but I really fail to see how this makes such a difference.
