So I didnt realize that when you buy a book directly on your Kobo, using wifi, it does not give you the chance to put in a discount code. BS... |

... But mine does? I bought a discounted book this way a few weeks ago, and the checkout process doesn't seem to have changed. The Add Promo Code function is still there.

Probably, to save bandwidth ('cos it's slow enough as it is), it leaves out that bit on agency books...?

I would love to use discount codes but it seems like every book I'm interested in buying on Kobo has "promo codes disabled for this book" on the page. So far I've only been able to find one book that allowed me to use a promo code.

Interesting that I just used the save2011 code. In the desktop software, it did not allow me to use the code (promo codes diabled for this book), but on the KT it did give me 20% off. I guess the moral of the story is, if you really want the discount, try it on desktop, the unit and by web as the ability to apply it could differ by method.

Generally, agency books have fixed pricing and no (pre-coupon code) discounts from Kobo. A lot of this stuff turns up as $12.99 or $10.99. If it's been already reduced, it's non-agency.

I've used the "FirstRead" to buy George R. R. Martin's A Game of Thrones 4-Book Bundle: I had 100HKD=€8,88 (KT bought through Swindon Books HK) as gift card, then the firstread code wtih 35% discount... I've bought the bundle for €1,49 instead of €15,95 (kobo price), instead of €25,79 (list price). Great, indeed!!! |

My strategy for non-agency books is to on publisher websites to see which authors are from which publisher. For instance I know that anything from Random House (and all their imprints like Del Rey, Bantam, etc.) is ok, while anything from Penguin or Harper Collins won't work.
