In any case if the new Sony Reader is indeed running on top of Android -- it makes this the most attractive e-Ink Android device for the modding community. It has all the hardware buttons required, as apposed to the Nook STR which requires an overlay of icons on the screen when running Android applications.

I'm curious what kind of CPU it will have and how it will compare with Nook STR.
I have never used Android myself, so I'm not sure how excited I am about that possibility. But a major CPU upgrade is something I am always looking for.

Speed has always been an issue with the Readers, and I'm not talking about the screen. The PRS-650 still gags when loading the NIV Bible, or anything sufficiently large and complex (the NIV Bible is my personal benchmark). Even though I have a TOC handy, and direct-jump to books and chapters, I can still find a verse in a paper Bible much faster. Heck, I can still get the spinning arrows sometimes when turning a page!!

This is all CPU/RAM, not screen related. And to be honest, the "speed bump" each Reader iteration has offered hasn't blown my socks off by any means; the goal, it seems, has been maintaining battery life over speed. And throwing Android in to the mix has the potential to slow things down even further. So the CPU/RAM is definitely something I would love to see getting some real engineering love.

May I ask, what is the advantage of rooting an e-ink device? I rooted my Nook Color because it makes a great tablet, but I can't imagine that there's anything I would want from the Android Market on an e-ink device.

Perhaps I'm lacking in imagination.

So enlighten me, please.

You're not the only one confused. I'm a HUGE android fan girl, and rooted my own Nook Color to access the market, but I can't think of anything on the market that I'd want on an eInk device.

I never really understood the rush to root the Nook2.

Well, no, wait, I can think of one thing: the reading apps. Accessing Kindle/Nook/whatever via WiFi and/or downloading from Dropbox would be nice. But I would suspect that the navigation would be slow and tedious -- the Dropbox catalog I have set up is basically a webpage, and webpage browsing on eInk is so slow.

Still, I can see that being a bonus for some people. Probably not nearly as many as those that root the Nook Color, though.

I don't get it either. Even if you could get to the android market, most apps expect color lcd displays etc...

I'd root it because there are still apps very well suited to eInk. You have a Sony reader, capable of reading ePub, and *root root root* now you also have the Kindle app on it too. One game my girlfriend and I play is 7 Little Words, which you have a page full of 16 buttons, with random groups of 2 and 3 letters in each one, and you have to use them to form words that correspond to clues. That'd be great on eInk. What about the various note taking apps like Evernote, or Catch?

Just because eInk doesn't have a fast refresh rate, and isn't color, doesn't make it not useful.

Perhaps someone in the know should start a thread listing useful apps for e-ink devices?

Stuff I use on the iPad that would not lose too much on an eink display with a good CPU, touch UI, and wifi

Rss readers, aggregate news readers like Pulse, zite, flipboard.
podcast player
pandora, slacker radio, Rdio
Various word games -- scrabble, words with friends, Crossword puzzle
sudoku
Manga reader.
Email.

Of course I don't know how enjoyable it will be

Count me in as another one without imagination. Rooting e-ink seems akin to putting a spoiler on a Prius.

Think others have said it already but main benefit right now would be install any e-Reader software you want.

Besides being able to easily access your Kindle, Nook, and Kobo books (there is an Android application for each of these) you can also install other 3rd party software to view your books or PDFs. I love Aldiko on Android, it's is extremely customizable compared to every other e-Reader software for tablets I've tried including all of the above and even iBooks on the iPad. Now combine this with the Dropbox application and you can have your own personal "cloud" e-Reader.

Furthermore I can think of a handful of apps/widgets that could be useful for me on a daily basis. For example, Calendar/Agenda widget (integrates with Google Calendar), Mint (personal finance) "Recent Transactions Live Folder", and the Daily Dilbert app.

At the end of the day if B&N or Sony ever actual offer there own "Market" to allow users to buy and install applications without rooting, I'd imagine we will see many more compelling "e-Ink friendly" applications appear very quickly. There is already a large and growing community of Android developers.

If you think about it the only usability requirements for e-Ink displays would be less animations, and a "next/previous" page support instead of only supporting swipe scrolling. Some applications already by their nature support these features. The only reason why there are not that many other applications that consider this is there is no "official" way that the mainstream consumer can get these applications, so all the focus is on the Android devices that are mainstream, LCD based devices.

On some, the app still provides a better experience. Plus if you use it as a Widget, it shows info right on the the home screen, without having to pull anything up.

An app designed for a tablet would provide a better experience on e-ink than the optimized browser?

Yes.

For example, for the "Recent Transactions Widget"
.. one press from homescreen, see recent transactions

vs

goto www.mint.com
.. wait for large webpage/images to render
.. enter email address
.. enter password (obviously complex)
.. wait for another page to load, lots of animations and data being loaded and refreshed (ajax)
.. press transactions tab
.. wait for another page lots of data /image to render
.. scroll around horizontally and vertically to find the center section of page to get to recent transactions section of the page
