Quite possible
One of the best places on the Internet.
I can think only of one more place, this time the whole forum (Russian speaking but the majority of its members are like me, immigrants), that I like as much. Unfortunately, I don't have as much time as I used to.

I just had a second cup of Bai Mu Dan Tie Guan Yin 'Iron Goddess of Mercy' Grade C October 2010. I adjusted a steeping a bit. Instead of 2tsps/1min20sec I had 3tsps/1min. I liked the flavour. Very good
Tired. Just finished vacuum cleaning my house. Need food injection.

Gazpacho, plain. Don't know what to eat after. There is a huge plate of spaghettis on the stove, but I made it for the kids, I don't want to touch any.
I like pasta, so it is hard, plus I have a cheese craving right now....

I didn't live in Germany but that (village/countryside) was the first explanation that popped up into my mind.

{SNIP}
In the cities, betreutes Wohnen is absolutely normal. So normal, as a matter of fact, and so used, that it is considered one of the last very good investment for investors looking for good business opportunity to park their money. Our bank keeps sending us leaflets about those.
It is popular in the UK too. At least with those who can afford it.
It is very unpopular to live with parents here. Parents themselves are not keen on living with children and try to get rid of them as soon as economically possible for both parties.

yeah, but those are very remote village I am talking about. Every little town now has its own retirement residence.

it is priced correctly in Germany. With her widow pension (not big by all means) plus a little help on our side, my mother in law can manage really well there, and still travel with her friends for a week here and there (nothing posh, just mid quality hotels, but she has fun with her girlfriends).

Tell me about it . My british neighbours here cannot understand why I won't send the kids away to "public schools". They also keep asking why I don't get a nanny.
I always answer sarcastically that they can't understand, they love their horse & hound more than they like their own kids. (it is a joke, I have to specify it, before I get myself banned )

I thought that maybe I knew odd couples. Apparently, it was/is the norm
There is always a distance between parents and kids. The parents love them and help the children have grown up, like 25-30, but they prefer to help from afar

I don't know when you have been living in Germany and for how long, but I lived permanently there the last 20 years and only moved last june to Spain. The big trend in Germany is very clearly to "betreutes Wohnen", which translated is something like sheltered living for elderly, which permits older people to keep their independence living in special residences in their own flats equipped with a panic button with a medical team on the premises 24/7. My mother in law lives in one of those, so do all her friends (which is why she decided on her own to move there, although she is perfectly healthy).
In the Eiffel, a region I know well, which is still totally countryside, you may have elderly living with their children, or more often the children live not far away from their parents, but mostly because they own land and work in the agriculture, so they have interests in common.
In the cities, betreutes Wohnen is absolutely normal. So normal, as a matter of fact, and so used, that it is considered one of the last very good investment for investors looking for good business opportunity to park their money. Our bank keeps sending us leaflets about those.

In Spain, if your old parent is not living next door or in your house, everyone thinks it is shameful and let you know. The "abuelos" are pretty much in charge of their grandkids, thus no professional babysitting here.
Retirement houses are very, very rare, and when, it is the extranjeros (the foreigners) that live in them.

I am married to a german guy, so it is not a criticism on my part, just a comment.
well the last time I came back was in '89, but it is true that both times I lived in farm towns and commuted to the big cities. the first time in Bavaria, the second in Hess

It is a big thread, the third largest, although it started 18 months later than the first and even later than the second one.
By far it is my preferred. I like some reading books threads and have fun with some on P&R, but here, there is an atmosphere that is so friendly and relaxed that is quite unique.

I like pasta, so it is hard, plus I have a cheese craving right now....
Now that I am so concerned about eating and stuff like that, I feel the urge of saying something useful about spaghetti.

They should be eaten 'al dente', that is the exact moment that they loose the hard core and become soft.

Why? For an important nutritional reason. From that point on, if one continues to cook them, the Glycemic Index keeps increasing. That means that the sugars are released in the blood stream faster.
A part from negative effects on people that are sensitive to this, it means that the sense of satiety will disappear earlier, and one becomes hungry again.
A sauce that contains some fat, oil or butter, will give a coating to the pasta and make its assimilation slower, thus increasing the amount of time that one feels satisfied.

For us Italian, this is an acquired taste, as Mamma cooked our first dish of pasta exactly like that. But it is based on sound nutritional reasons. So, you Northerners, do cook your pasta al dente and you will feel better, and it will last you longer.

no me digas You should read the Childrens' Book by Dame Antonia S. Byatt. A tough cookie of a writer.

Apparently, the cultures that have the strongest parental links are those of the Jewish and of the Italians. In Italy, in spite of the disastrous financial situation, common to all the Western World, we are doing fine because family support is strong.

Actually I have to correct my analysis. I think this one is strongest thread. For the moment at least. I checked the posters in the 3 threads and the first two have the largest contributions from members that are not active anymore, with the exception of Kenny, and of the great snake that do not come here often though, and of KK.

Take me to the night I'm tipping topsy-turvy turning upside down
Hold me tight and whisper what you wish for, there is no one here around
You may sing-song me sweet smiles regardless of the city's careless frown
Come watch the no colors fade blazing into petal sprays of violets of dawn

In blindfull wonderment's enchantment, you can lift my wings softly to flight
Your eyes are like swift fingers reaching out into the pockets of my night
Whirling twirling puppy warm before the flashing cloaks of darkness gone
Come see the no colors fade blazing into petal sprays of violets of dawn

So Prince Charming I'll be on two white steeds to bring you dappled diamond crowns And climb your tower Sleeping beauty 'fore you ever know I've left the ground You can wear a Cinderella, Snow White, Alice Wonderlanded gown Come watch the no colors fade blazing into petal sprays of violets of dawn

But if I seem to wander off in dreamlike looks please let me settle slowly.
It's only me just staring out at you, a seeming stranger speaking holy
No I don't mean to wake you up, it's only loneliness just coming on
So let the no colors fade blazing into petal sprays of violets of dawn

Like shadows bursting into mist behind the echoes of this nonsense song
It's just a chase in whispering trail of secret steps, oh see them laughing on
There's magic in the sleepiness of waking to a childish sounding yawn
Come watch the no colors fade blazing into petal sprays of violets of dawn

What a delight! I woke up with my favorite love song going round and round in my head!

Good morning, everyone! Sunny Sundays! And a mug of my new Keemun tea sent to me by that wonderful East India Company! Yes, Astra, it is their Keemun Downy Bud Tea Loose Leaf, and a very nice brew indeed. I think I still prefer that unbranded keemun I got from the Chinese Import shop, but only because it was a bit more potent in my mouth. The flavors are almost the same.

As Libertine as I am, I do have to force myself to remember that there are those who are not, and they actually DO get offended by some of our pictures and comments. While I don't understand 'why,' I do appreciate that they 'do' and so we need to temper our pleasures in the interest of fair play for all here. I would not at all object to an "Adult Only" sub-forum, similar to the Religion and Politics snake pit, where "anything goes." I'd be a very happy member of that group.

I do think that one or two of the moderators could be 'a bit more moderate...' But I do recognize that it is NOT an easy job. I think it would be a good thing to institute a warning system... I know that when one of my posts was misinterpreted by a mod and removed, after I explained what was meant the thread was reinstated but in a different sub-forum. But that wouldn't have happened had I been simply banned for my post and not had the opportunity to state my case.

Gently, gently, catchee monkey... Change happens slowly sometimes, and often from directions we are not aware of.

My son's mother told me that she is planning to sell their home and move north so as to be in the same town as my newly married son. When I married her, we specifically moved 4,000 km away from our parents. I wonder how he feels about this...
But then, we were hippies. My son is much more conservative. He even wore a Tux for his wedding. (His mother and I didn't even wear shoes to ours.) Where did I go wrong?

I think another mug of East India Company's Keemun tea is in order. Then I need to go out and buy some fish! I put in an aquarium three days ago!
