Fonts of the PRS T1
As you can see, watching a video in German language on You Tube (url
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=EGHLZLGk-18 - expecially at the minute 1.20 of the video), on the PRS T1 you can chose 7 fonts: Original, Amasis (s), Frutingen Neue (ss), Palatino Nova (s), Really no 2 (s), Univers Next (ss), Verdana (ss) (s means serif font, ss means sans-serif: so 3 are serif and 3 are sans-serif). J don’t understand why they insist with the sans-serif fonts, since for reading the serif are better (have you ever seen a newspaper with sans-serif fonts?). The best font appear the Amasis (better than the one in the Nook Touch) and not bad is Really no 2. But there are no font condensed. You can choose 8 different sizes of the fonts (instead of the previous 6 sizes of the 50 series), that I hope are more gradual. Apparently there is no way to change the line spacing and to shrink the page (as Nook Touch and Kindle do), and it seems impossible to justify the text. Moreover, there is no hyphenation (as in the Nook Touch). The movie confirm that the new pinch of the screen allow you to magnify the text, without reflowing it. In the same manner it is actually possible with the font menu of the 50 series. Last edited by prsita; 09-06-2011 at 02:28 AM. |

Good find on this, I was curious when someone would post a list of exactly what the font controls looked like. Looks like Original simply means "default ADE fonts or whatever the book specifies". Glad that Amasis is there, since it's grown on me quite a bit (use it for my Nook STR and PRS-650).

Anyone know what the font on the 950 is called? I'm sort of hoping that is the "Original" font, because I've grown to like it. Going from Nook's Amasis to the Sony was quite a switch, but the more I've used the Sony, the more I have liked the font on it.
Now Amasis looks too heavy and not very elegant and I often end up prefering the Light Classic on the Nook. At any rate, choice is good. I hope I like one of the serif fonts, because I do not care for reading sans-serif. I don't think sans-serif looks better in books, though I do tend to like it on many websites. But that's a whole different thing. What looks good on my backlit LCD computer monitor is not necessarily what I want to see on my e-ink reader. I hate reading on my monitor! |

I believe the default font on the previous Sony readers was in the same vein as Times New Roman. If I had to guess is that "Original" uses that default font, or whatever is set by the eBook without any overrides.

If I have a choice which font to use (like with the Pocketbook 360), I will choose sans-serif, because it is pleasant to my eyes and so far I have not found it harder to read. So I am very grateful if a reader allows me to use it, regardless of what seems to be "better".

For serif/sans-serif readability, it depends on the display resolution: sans-serif fonts are generally more readable on low resolution display while serif fonts are much better for high resolution (> 200 dpi, like iPhone 4 retina display at more than 300dpi). With a 800x600 resolution for a 4.8x3,6 inch dimensions, the resolution is 167dpi, I'm not sure there's a real difference. Font weight (blackness) is probably a more important factor. |

Never mind the fonts
Kindle, Sony, Nook whatever have done one thing right, and that's to make the standard font readable.
If it's the publishers intent, they can embed any kind of font they like, right there in the ebook. When you buy any kind of book, you get exactly what the publisher wants you to get. If they want you to get a fancy font, they'll give it to you. If they neglect to define a specific, fancy font in their ebook, they are assuming your ereader will render thier content in a readable fashion. If font-fetishism is your thing, maybe you'll get blast out of this: Go to your local bookstore, have a salesperson find you a book, and say: "I'd really like to buy this book, but could I have one with a sans serif font?" Slack jaw! |

![]() You mean readable for you ? What a lucky guy ! Again and again the same assumption: if it the old technology (here books) didn't implement it and I don't need or just want this feature, why would you integrate that in the new one ? Some of the answers: 1) no technology is perfect. 2) because now we can 3) Some people have problems or needs YOU DON'T. I know a person who cannot read small text and can't use glasses or contact lenses because he have a conic cornea (keratoconus). He JUST NEEDS big fonts. |

I read all my books on Verdana. I really like that font for reading so if they are using that font, that would be good for me. We'll see if we end up with this one for my dh.

I saw that font on one of the videos and was excited for it. I'm pretty easy going and changing the font isn't that important to me unless it's really awful but if the option is there and there's one I like I just may partake of it. ![]() |

All six fonts should be size-adjustable, and if the largest SIZE is anything like the one on the PRS 650, your acquaintance with the impaired eyesight shouldn't have any problems. But, if you were really clever, and installed a braile font, you'll still be missing(touching) something(even on the touch screen). |

Do you think this might mean that it will be easier to add custom fonts to the reader? /is hopeful?
