He leaves a wonderful -if temporarily under appreciated- legacy that will enshrine his contribution forever.

He will be missed by so many. May we all be inspired to continue his trailblazing work, to spread knowledge freely everywhere in the world, without regard to who can pay for it.

Aw dang. I swapped emails with him once. He was exceptionally nice.

I hope his passing won't mean the death of Project Gutenberg.

With how many thousands of people seem to work on the site uploading texts etc. I don't think the site is in any danger of dying anytime soon. I wager since he had been working on ebooks for 40 yrs that he took some steps to make sure it would continue on after his death. I mean I don't imagine he expected to go so soon, but when you've worked on something that long you eventually come to consider how to make certain it will keep going even after you're gone.

I dunno. I've spent a hefty chunk of my life in the university culture, and I've seen how easy it is for an institution to cut funding once the faculty advocate for a project is gone.

I hope I'm wrong, though, and that Project Gutenberg will turn out to be self-sustaining.
