Echoes of Honor by David Webber

Didn't really know where else to put this so here goes......

I've been reading this and have notice my copy is riddled with typos and such. It's the official copy from Baen's Mission of Honor CD and frankly I'm pretty surprised at the number of errors there are!

Now normally what I do is bookmark any page I see that needs a correction and use Sigil to fix it all up once I've finished the book. Alas, my Bebook one crashed and needed resetting and I lost all the bookmarks!!!

So..............

Since the book is freely available, non-DRMed and Baen encourage people to share it around at will............I'm wondering if anyone has a clean copy they could email me? Failing that if anyone could point me in the right direction to getting a good copy that would be appreciated too.

What kind of typos/errors are you seeing? Not much use to pass on a file if they've all got the same mistakes.

misspelling of the author's name for starters.

Huh? Where, exactly. I'm currently looking at the epub with Calibre's viewer and David Weber's name is spelled correctly.

Edit.. Never mind. I need to read titles better..

In a few spots the numeral 1 is in place of the capital letter I.
A couple of places where the grammar doesn't make sense.
A couple of places where a word is repeated.
A few spelling errors here and there.

Frankly, if I didn't know better I would think this is a poorly scanned and OCR'd pirate copy.

If anyone has read a copy and didn't notice any of the above kinds of errors then the copy they read would be a huge step above mine.

The copy currently available at webscription.net is probably in much better shape, but I can't confirm that without at least one specific error to check.

But while the contents of the CD are freely shareable, I don't think any later version of the text is so blessed. I'll happily check the current version for you, but I don't feel free to pass a copy on to you. It's $5 at webscription.net.

Thanks pdurrant. Here's three errors.....I figure if they've got these then they probably have most if not all of them.

Chapter 29 - 8th paragraph starts with the line "I really wish you'd waited to light that thing until 1 was somewhere else"(numeral 1 instead of I)

Chapter 30 - Begins - The lift doors opened, and Citizen Captain Joanne Hall - known I to friends and family........(grammar "known I to.....)

Chapter 31 - 6th paragraph ends with the line - They were all still busy looking down at the table rather than meet his eyes.(grammar...rather than meet his eyes)

Thanks for taking the time to check it for me, if they have those errors fixed I'll pick it up from webscriptions myself.

It seems those errors are still in the text. Well, the errors in chapter 29 and 30 are there. I must be dull today, as I can't spot the third error in the book or in what you've typed.

There is a place to report errors in final released ebooks (Not in eARCs or snippets or part-months, as those are all non-final text anyway.)

Send an email to info@baen.com, give details like you've done above, and hopefully they'll get fixed (eventually.)

And yes, that "1" instead of "I" might well be an OCR error. Echoes of Honor was originally published before webscriptions started, and they might have had to work from a printed book.

i could definitely use some freezing weather right now as here every day lately it gets into (at least) the upper 90's, where are you to get this freezing weather?

On second reading I see how it isn't really an error. Just sounds funny to me to say "looking down" then follow it with "meet his eyes" rather than "meeting"

I'll email them with the list of errors I still have. Can't be bothered re-reading the entire book straight away in order to find all the ones I lost.

I'm in Australia and whilst it is coming into spring and the days are generally awesome, we have had a cold snap the last few days.
