And I completely disagree with that. So, your statement simply isn't true.

That is not quite true really. I was speaking to a sales rep at Dick Smith Electronics whilst ordering a Kindle 3 for my wife. He told me that they cannot keep enough stock of the Kindles in store. DSE are owned here by Woolworths who also sell the Kindle 3. My wife actually has sold Kindles as part of her cashier job there. Both stores run out of stock on a daily basis. I noticed in my travels far more people are now using Kindles than iPads to read on, at least on train journeys into the CBD. Purely my observation of course. Could it be that an iPad costs $600, whilst a Kindle 3 only costs $160? I would have to say that does play a big part in why dedicated devices are going to be a far more economical option for many readers than an expensive bells and whistles touch screen tablet. Regardless, I see the advantage of a tablet device in my hobby. Keeping reference PDF's close at hand near my hobby desk is easier than running to my notebook or PC to check a colour PDF. That is not a prolonged reading session, merely casual use. Such a device for me, would never replace my ereader for reading a fiction book period. |

We have shared opinions which does not = "true" or "false". Popular opinion, (non-scientific proof) leans more towards e-ink than LCD when it comes to preventing eye-strain. Edited to Ask: Have you ever read on an e-ink device? If so, how long did you use it? Have you ever read for an hour or more using e-ink vs LCD? I'm very curious. As I mentioned earlier, I used to read on my iPhone, and I've read on my PC. I have also borrowed my S-I-L's Nook for about 45 mins give or take, and the difference between it and my Kindle were quite noticeable. I asked her why she chose the Nook, and she said it was the buttons (or lack there of). The Kindle had too many buttons, to the Nooks few; she likes the Nooks navigation better as its easier on her hands/fingers. Last edited by Nyssa; 09-09-2011 at 08:19 AM. |

Must be different from WA, but here in Queensland you can't buy an eReader at retail very easily anywhere... only Tablets. Talk to sales staff here and they dismiss eReaders as "old stuff – Tablets killed them" (past tense!). But, getting back to the Poll subject, e-Ink is better (eReaders) but what we like best won't matter much. It's what sells best that will determine what we end up using. |

My hubby, on the other hand, wants a tablet just for the fun of it; an iPad specifically, I believe, but not at the current prices. |

I usually only read about 30 minutes each day (not counting the few minutes I manage to catch while waiting for my ride home). Those 30 minutes are all on my LCD. But, during weekends and holidays, I spend more time reading. If I read outside, it'll be on one of my e-inks. For two reasons: I have my JE100 tuned for night time reading, which means a dark background, gray lettering and the backlight turned all the way down. In a well-lit environment you can't even see the screen is on... The other reason is because the battery of my JE100 is aging, and I can't get more than 1 1/2 hours out of it anymore. However, when I'm reading in bed (which I most often am, considering the average summer we have here...), I'll use my JE100 (plugged in...). For hours on end, if I get the chance... I never noticed any difference in "eye fatigue" between the two. I do notice it, however, when I'm sitting behind my monitor, when it's dark outside. Especially when I'm posting (like this). The screen is too bright, compared to the surrounding light. (Usually, when I'm sitting behind the monitor, I'll be playing a game...). So, I think those people that complain about eye fatigue are simply reading from a screen that is too bright compared to the surrounding light. As I mentioned here (or somewhere else), my JE100 shines less bright than a candle... (you know, those that you put underneath a pot of tea to keep it warm...) |

Seeing how you have certain light requirements for certain readers, I'm surprised that you say that you're not feeling a difference in the two. There is obviously a reason why you felt the need to change your settings, and to switch readers depending based on where you're reading, besides the battery life, of course. Would you have the same set up with a brand new battery? I know for me, the only thing I have to do to read my Kindle at night is turn on a light. With my phone and computer, even with turning on the light, I still have to take a break every once in while, as my eyes get tired. |

I started reading ebooks on an LCD ( Rocketbook ), moved to an eInk reader (Sony 505), added another LCD (iPhone), added another eInk reader (K2), but now mostly read on my iPad 2. No problems with any of them (except the flashing on the Sony, which bothered me more than on the K2 for some reason)

Yes. As I don't want to change the screen settings every time (it's not the fastest tablet on the earth...). If I had a different tablet, one that is faster, I'll probably use the 7" more often.

Edit: Oh, and if I could have gotten a 5" or 6" screen, with the same properties as my PDA screen, I would never have bought an e-ink device except for those holidays where I won't have access to a powerplug for a few days. Last edited by Sweetpea; 09-10-2011 at 04:25 AM. |
