Which is why most banks (at least over here) periodically send account holders an email reminding them that no authentic bank employee will ever call to 'confirm' information over the phone, and certainly never by email. | |

The latest one over here is the random call from "Microsoft" who has detected a virus in your computer. Please log on to this sight so we can get control of you computer and remove it. It only costs you $250 by credit card. I told them I had a Mac and they hung up. The next time I called the woman a thief. She took offense but finally had to hang up. Still, for an Indian conman, even if he got one sucker a day he'd be earning more than down at the call centre. |

Maybe she should look at this as a purchase of artistic content. Art appreciates in value over time, while electronic equipment depreciates. Some guy, a few years ago, made his name painting a banana. And then there is this article on carving your own Kindle.

Man, I was hoping this was one of those publicity auction things, like the shiny gold PS3 or whatever that was recently sold. I was only surprised that the limited edition wooden iPad sold so cheaply. |

I got the Microsoft call the other day. The other thing to do with calls like that is just waste their time. Time spent with you is time they aren't phishing for others. Caller: "Is [name] here?" You: "Hang on, I'll get them..." Then just place the phone on the counter without hanging up and go do some other stuff, hopefully involving power tools close to the phone. |

The "wooden iPad" woman got what she deserved. She thought she was buying stolen merchandise, which is morally wrong. Yeah, it's illegal, too...but more than that, it's wrong. I just have to laugh when greedy, immoral people get ripped off while trying to buy stolen merchandise. They know they're dealing with someone with no qualms about ripping people off, yet they expect to be treated fairly and honorably...by thieves! Then she wants to waste taxpayer dollars having the police track these guys down? Take a little responsibility for your own actions, lady! |
