Omitting the stylus storage port on the new T1 is a calculated effort on Sony's part to teach their customers some discipline. And woe onto you if you ever lose it! The magical mystery hand-held device, developed by dozens of highly qualified engineers in heartbeaking, decades long toil can ONLY be replaced by Sony at the perfectly reasonable price of $59.95. And that's practically giving them away! |

Nothing Here for Me...
After reading the reviews, and looking at the pictures and video, I must say that I am not impressed. Sony has bowed to the demands of the sheep, and lowered the quality of their, once fine, product.
I've owned a 500, a 505, and now a 650. The 650 is a great piece of tech - solid, dependable, clear, enough storage, long battery. It was not broken, and I wish they had not tried to "fix" it by adding in iJunk features. Someone in this thread stated that "everyone" was asking for Wi-Fi. Untrue. My colleagues who own readers do not want, and can't use Wi-Fi. We use Calibre for our books, and get them from all over, not from the Sony Store. Plastic? I have always loved the solidity of a metal piece of tech gear. Plastic is cheap, and, as someone else stated in this thread, will wear on the edges and look worn very quickly. Multi-touch? Who cares. This is not an iPad or an iPhone. Not even close. Too bad Sony felt the need to try to take some market share from Apple. I want a reader to read books on. Not to browse, to look up Wikipedia, etc. When I am on a plane, reading a paperback, I don't suddenly wish I could play a game on it, or make a call when we land......it is a book. To be read. Sony made readers, and made them well. Too bad that time (seems) to be passing us. I am glad that bought a second 650 on eBay as a spare. Looks like I may be buying another shortly, so I will have a spare for the spare. |

I agree with you mgwerner... got my ereaders for reading. Also, concerning the plastic housing.. some of the kindles (thankfully not mine yet) have developed cracks in the lower corners (per kindleboard forum). Seems Amazon has been good on replacing those, but still........love the metal of my prs350/650.

Part of the problem is that there isn't much to improve right now. Adding WiFi was about the only option they had to 'improve' the 650, which is still pretty-much state-of-the-art at this size. Personally, I'd love to see a higher-end version with a 250+ dpi screen, and would pay for it, but that's up to eInk more than Sony |

Sadly, that's not entirely true for the x50. I have only 1 microSD charger (or rather, a charger where I can insert my own USB cable). That one works. I have 2 car (sigaret) chargers. One works, the other doesn't. My mother has a microSD charger (from her phone). It doesn't work. I bought a new one for her (a generic one, from a company that sells phone chargers) and that one works. Why? Don't know. What's the difference? No clue... And if you read about the x50 and wall chargers, you'll see the same thing everywhere: some work, some don't.

However, I believe the history is going to repeat itself. PRS-505 was a perfect reader for its time, then they made 700, 600...and only 3 years later they manage to design a successful model - PRS-650. They will hone features and h/w on a few new models then come up with an exclusive one. I guess till then 650 will be my friend. |

My 505 is still going strong 4 years after it was purchased. It gets used several hours every day, these days by my wife. But if I have to call a reader a perfect reader, my vote goes for my 950. It has everything that was clamored for by those who felt deprived by, for example, lack of wifi on the 650. I expect to get a lot of years of use out of my 950. I wonder how many people will be boasting about their T1 a couple of years down the road.

I don't share your point of view. In my opinion, Sony ran out of readers because they had low inventory, not because they were selling them like hot cakes. I think there is some truth to the fact that they were focusing on the japanese ereader market.
