Now you don't have to use the home button and start again, you can just press back." Then he demonstrated it for me.

He look decidedly uncomfortable the minute I mentioned Android.
Kindles have had Back buttons for years, and they are Linux based without Android. Android is not required for a Back button by any means. I have no idea whether Sony actually used Android with their own UI on top of it or stuck with Linux. My guess is that with so few changes to the new T1 over the x50 series they would have saved lots of development money by sticking to the Linux based system they already had. Time will tell. If Sony did stick with Linux, then you want see Android geeks flocking to buy the T1 just to root it.

@JSWolf, the video I saw of the T1 in action showed a VERY sluggish device. My Kindle 3 which is known for a slow processor seems faster than the T1, so Sony obviously didn't take advantage of the faster processor if it has one. Of course some of the slowness seems to be due to very poor interface choices by Sony, like making you click/press several times just to lookup a word in the dictionary rather than making it a one-click operation. The key to speeding up an eInk reader is designing an interface that requires as few screen clicks/presses as possible. You could hookup a 4-core 3GHz processor to an eInk reader and still you will have to wait for the slowest component, the eInk screen, to refresh. A faster processor means faster indexing and searching and non-screen calculations, but the eInk screens will always be slow to refresh even with the fastest processor available.

I'm disappointed. Sony lost the chance to stay on top with a really exciting new reader.

While the price of T1 is very nice there's really no new feature. That way my 650 will still be my favorite.
I appreciate your input. I also have a 650 (got it on release with cover -- cost --- dont ask), BUT

there is one clear advantage and that is weight. What is the weight comparison between 650 and new T1? substantial I think.

Also what is the screen comparison in terms of clarity? and refresh rate between screens.

For me, even though I own and use my 650 a lot, the T1 has so many advantages that I am tending more and more towards getting one and selling the 650. I read a lot of PDFs so the multitouch functionality is excellent, especially the pinch-to-zoom (which I am really glad does not reflow for my needs). Also I very often want to look something up in wikipedia or google while I am reading. The new weight and size and lighter covers also make a difference as I always want smaller and lighter things. If the software/hardware is a bit faster thats also a huge boost just as the back button will also be excellent for me. The new plastic case, while the aluminium was nicer, will certainly not get as hot as the 650 when I am reading in the sun, and with aluminium one probably could not have wifi as easily. I just hope the wifi can handle different wifi security protocols like those of the university where I work. I like the fonts but its nice that there are now a few more steps in font sizes as I always found the jump from s to m far too large. Oh and the price is excellent too.

Good advice! When I get it, I'll just hook it up to see if it needs charging, and THEN I'll go straight to the crapper before testing anything!

Nope, just someone who won't lie to me. However, expecting that from a German salesperson is quite a stretch.

Perhaps, if they were just able to read a simple specifications sheet, or read at all, it would help.

Oh yah, the reading thing would really help, since they're marketing a reading device.

Really? I'll be #, if knew any of that until I had the T1 in my own two hands. But actually, I did for a few seconds, at the IFA a couple of days ago.

One touch => popup menu => your choice: Dictionary, Google, Wiki

One! more touch to determine which one you want right NOW! (Google and Wiki didn't actually work 'cause'o no WiFi(haha), but dictionary did)

What about people who don't want to look up anything at all, just search?

ps: When using a new Sony ereader, please refrain from clicking and, most definitely, pressing. You will, almost certainly damage the device by pressing to hard.

My only consideration, is the PRS-T1 as glossy as the pictures show?

Does landscape mode work OK? Landscape on the 950 does not cut off sections properly, and there is overlap, making reading sequentially tricky. The Kindle 3 gets landscape perfectly, by contrast.

Yes, for some reason they decided to give it a high gloss finish. Which puts the T1 in a "never buy" category for me. The glare off that glossy finish is really distracting and irritating to me.

Ugh. Then no thanks. I'll probably still buy a Harry Potter Special Edition reader. Just don't know if I'll actually use it. If the case hides the bezel or if the special edition has a matte bezel (I could hope, right?), then probably.

Someone correct me if this is wrong, but from what I've been able to gather from a few sources, the Harry Potter Special Edition is simply the black finish reader (yes, also high gloss finish). You get a coupon with the reader to get one of the Harry Potter books for free from Pottermore. And that's the extent of the Harry Potter Special Edition. There's nothing special about the reader to distinguish it as anything to do with Harry Potter by looking at it.

A bit of fine grained sandpaper will fix that glossy finish, no probs. Sure it will ruin your resell but for $150 why resell?

It's to fear this will end in an desaster. I think the color (at least of the red one) is just on the surface with white or light grey plastic below. Same situation with the backside of the PRS650 or PRS350. Color is just on the surface.

There have been rumors that there may be an edition later with all the books. Also it may come with a HP logo case. Either way its a bit lame.
