A little nervous about rooting

I would like to try rooting my nook but i am a little nervous. Is it possible to revert it to it's unrooted state if i ever wanted to? If it is then is it a big job?

I read around here that turning on, turning off during booth and repeating 8 times will restore the part of the OS that is affected by the root. However, your books will remain untouched. Might be great to hear from someone who actually did it though.

You should be able to restore to defaults by going to the Settings menu and selecting "Deregister and erase".

Out of curiosity, why do you want to root the touch?

before 'upgrading' your Touch, BACK UP FIRST!

you have been warned, but if you back it up first, you won't have to resort to all the 'restart 8 times' nonsense, and can simply do a:

dd if=my_backup.img of=/dev/touch_dev bs=1M

you can use OS X, Windoze, or Linux to back up or restore the 1,958,739,968-byte image (boot w/a noogie.img microsd, then determine the 'touch' dev by using fdisk -l or your system's filesystem table)... backing up is as simple as:

dd if=/dev/touch of=my_backup.img bs=1M

oh, and 'upgrading' does not need to involve installation of the Android SDK, use of the adb command, or the other convoluted rooting means available... simply download touchnooter-1.6.24.img, write it to a microsd, then boot your Touch w/the card (directions and other details are available if you know how to use Google)

i think you'll be pleased, but you should know that you won't be able to watch videos, may have to upgrade the Market app and make a few other changes... i have found excellent versions of Klondike, xmahjong, backgammon, and chess for my 'upgraded' Touch and enjoy using the Opera mini browser once in a while (i rarely turn on my Touch's wifi)

good luck in your endeavor

p.s. btw, the OP should have posted this in the Nook Dev sub-forum, not here - just a nitpick

Late to the thread here - but why not just boot an Android version from an SD card? You don't void the warranty, and you just remove that particular SD card to boot the Nook normally. If you're not comfortable making a bootable SD card, there is a company that makes them for you. Google it.

I'd love to be wrong on this ... but I think the os-on-a-card only applies to the Nook Color, not the eink versions.

Yep, you are correct. I had Nook Color on the brain, I've been researching low cost tablets lately.

I did it with my nook touch - super simple - easy - and you can switch back and forth with between the nook launcher and the android launcher with ease. The main reason I rooted it was so I could read PDF's in landscape mode which works great now with EzPDF from the android market
