The same question as usual for me... Can one buy it and Amazon books anonymously? If so I welcome Kindle being sold retail in canada, even if for a higher price than from Amazon in the USA. John Doe (yours truly) succeeded in buying the Kobo and gift cards to buy books for it with good old fashioned cash. Can I do the same with the Kindle at The Source or Staples? Hey, I'll just call and find out - then report back to all you James Bond, PT, anarchist types.

Called Staples. Yes, the wifi is available for $150 aprox. But one cannot buy gift cards. One has to buy direct from Amazon, so it is not anonymous because one has to use a credit card.
I suppose one could buy gift cards from one of the many Vancity Credit Union branches here (maximum $500). But even that is iffy, as some businesses require that the card be registered. OK, so one can register it to John Doe at 1234 ABC street. But I hate having to deceive or jump through hoops. So, there is something to be said for paper. Nobody asks you to give them your life story in order to read 'Our Enemy the State' or 'How to Sell your Body Organs'. At least Amazon fought in court the US government's wanting access to purchasers reading choices and won no? "Ask me no questions and I'll tell you no lies." |

DRM ties a book to a user through personal information. The DRM encryption keys are set up by a corporate server somewhere, which needs your personal information (credit card number, device serial number,...) to do that. Hence, there can be no anonymous purchases of books with DRM.

practical and political problem
Quote:
I suppose it is a problem. How does a company protect its copyright in a nation where there are no national ID cards? I suppose one could use passports (intended for international travel), drivers licenses (supposedly for driving though they are defacto national ID in Canada and USA I presume, it's nothing like the safety licence it's supposed to be - instead it's used as a police record ID) or SIN in Canada / SSN in USA (supposedly for taxes and Federal programs though it has increasingly become a non-required requirement, i.e. you can refuse to give it to businesses and they have the right to refuse to do business with you - so much for privacy law! As a soveriegn individual I resist every step by the state and corporations to file me. But I dó want to support authors and publisher. So it is indeed a philosphic/political challenge of how to do business privately and effectively in the new world order of monopoly capitalism and criminal gangs (especially goverments, the most well armed and well financed thugs). |

Kobo WiFi and Kobo Touch are also now available at The Source stores in Canada as well as online at Staples.

Staples runs discount codes/coupons almost monthly that should reduce the cost $15 or so.

I have a question about Kindle usage in Canada, specifically the 3G model. I want to be able to look something up on the web while camping, eg go to a website and look up something. That's the only reason I'd want internet access while camping. If I can't get to websites while camping using the Kindle 3G, I'd rather just get the wifi model. Any of you that has a Kindle in Canada (Ontario, and we go camping in Algonquin Park near Huntsville), have you been able to access webpages with the 3G network? I know you can in the US but I've heard that the browser is not accessible in Canada, or is that the older model?
Thanks in advance for your replies! Hugs, Ellie |

I have a Kindle 2 which is the older model and no problems whatsoever surfing the web via 3G (besides the fact that it's kind of slow and pages take forever to go through). Mind you, I'm in the BC Lower Mainland in one of the suburban metropolitan areas; I don't know what the reception would be like while camping.
But I imagine that if you can get decent cellphone access where you're staying, then the 3G would work as well. Hope this helps, and welcome to MobileRead! |
