Cool... Cybook seems like it has some nice touches in the firmware over the Sony. Although, I've pretty much decided my next device will be a Kindle 2.0.. assuming they fix the stupid page turn buttons.

I couldn't get past the shape of the Kindle, it just looks ugly. And I wanted a reader not something to type on. I am curious has anyone tried reading with the kindle in bed ? I find that's one of the things I enjoy the most about my Cybook, being able to read books in bed, holding up Stephen Nealsons books in bed was dangerous.

There might be a way to have the Gen3 off and the display not blank. I could be wrong here, but maybe if you let the battery go totally flat.

Pressing the "Reset" button does it, just like it does on the Sony. A slightly drastic measure, however .

Kindle works fine in bed. So does Iliad. Both are small and light enough to hold in one hand, though I usually prop my device on my belly.

I'm waiting to see if Cybook measures up to the praise it has received. Any device I've bought so far has been money well spent. I'd buy a Sony except most of my books are in prc.

The Iliad weighs 13.7 oz, the Kindle 10.2 oz and Cybook a measly 6.13 oz, so I bet I will enjoy the lighter weight while in prone position.

The Gen3's case (which you really MUST use!) is heavier than the machine itself, but even in its case, it still has a lower mass than a small paperback book.

Why must the case be used Harry?

I never use my Kindle case or Iliad case (unless taking it out of the house).

I suppose it's a personal thing, but I would never use my Gen3 without its case, because the case provides it with protection. I have a habit of falling asleep in bed while reading, and while dropping the Gen3 onto the floor in its case does no harm, I wouldn't want to do the same thing without the case!

I also find that the case makes it more comfortable to use, because it's nice and soft to the touch, rather than the hard plastic of the bare machine.

Just a personal preference.

I take my Cybook out of the case to read, but put it right back into the case when I'm done. I love the lighter, smaller feel of the "naked" Cybook, but would not feel comfortable storing or transporting it without the case.

Also if you need to feel like reading a book, the transition is easier with the case. it makes me feel that i have something in the hand. Still after two weeks using my Cybook, i am feeling more and more confortable without the cover, in subway or at home.

If the battery is only used when turning a page, there is no point in shutting down the Cybook after reading.

Personnaly i just put a nice pic and let it like that...

Actually I have started to read without the cover when I sit in a chair and that is because I have started to think that the Cybook with cover is too heavy for certain reading positions.

Not quite so. The screen only uses the battery when it changes, but the processor still draws some power even when idle, it has to be "on" so that it can react when you press a button.

The case has other vital uses too .
Stops the cats from damaging the Cybook when they're prancing around on the bed when I'm trying to read ......

I tried the case, but that made the unit too big. I like how thin and light the Cybook is; I can slip it into a jacket pocket when changing trains when it's "naked". It's also easier to read one handed without the case (useful when standing on the subway). But that's my personal preference :-)

Actually, I regret having bought the delux edition 'cos I don't use the case, the spare battery hasn't been needed, the external power adapter can be got for $5 on ebay and the Library page doesn't handle 100s of books very well in the current version so the SD card isn't being used. Ah well. But I do like the cybook itself :-)
