The second is a very well known quote. So I hope I'm not mistaken in saying that it's from The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame.

On the assumption that I'm right, I'll give my quote now. This is from a 1961 novel.

I'm pretty sure I know this - I was a huge fan of the series (novels and 200AD renditions, too).

OK, thanks @pdurrant. This is the opening line from one of my all time favourites, a novel written in 1939:

"I cannot blame them. After all, one doesn't need a telescopic sight to shoot boar and bear; so that when they came on me watching the terrace at a range of five hundred yards, it was natural enough that they should jump to conclusions."

No Google please, peeps, as it is an easy find...

. It was one I first read as a teenager, and it has stayed with me since. In fact, my first novel (perpetually unfinished) has been likened to it, so I guess it has had a lasting influence...
