Life... Gets in the way of everything... This summer has been rough for reading. I'll probably make it into the high 80's, but I'm really not putting any effort into it anymore. Oh, and damn you Angry Birds... |

School slowed me down somewhat, but I'm still at 81 for the year. From September last year to December 31 I read 52 (according to Shelfari - and September is when I started keeping track of it). So I expect at least 104 total, but am hoping for more. The last "hard" class is done; but I do expect there to be lots of writing (which is time consuming) with the rest of my classes, so I'm not sure how the rest of the year will go.

I'm a slow reader, so far this year I have read maybe a little over 2000 pages. Well it's not a marathon so I'm ok with myself.

I think there is, because I had to go online to get help with one level, and it appeared the video was from a pc. For True Blood fans, Plants vs.Zombies is what the guard was playing on her ipad when she went down to check on Luis and Antonia. |

I don't know if you are familiar with Goodreads. One thing I love about Goodreads is once you establish a goal for yourself, it displays a little widget on your home page that tells you your standing compared to your goal. Of course you still have to keep it updated with the books you've read.

.....I’m a slow reader, but I usually get through seventy or eighty books a year, mostly fiction. I don’t read in order to study the craft; I read because I like to read. ..........— Stephen King, On Writing (2000). King reads only slightly more on average than I do, so I don't feel too bad. I'm a slow reader as well, averaging only about 60-65 books a year; a mix of fiction and non-fiction. |

^Hmmm....if slow = 60 and I'm on pace to get to 38 right now then? I'm slower than slow? A sloth? Having trouble firing synapses?

Re-reading is what's slowing me down! I insisted to myself that I'd only add books to the list that I was reading for the first time. But I do so love re-reading books... so I'm only at 38 |

Which will make you reading *more* than 3 times the average of most people (Americans). Are you enjoying the reading? Then don't beat yourself up for *only* reading 38 books/year.

I think these three questions are more importantly than how much you read: 1) Did you understand what you read? 2) Did you enjoy your reading? and possibly (this doesn't apply to purely escapist reading, which serves its uses as well), 3) Did you learn anything? Did what you read help you to grow as a person? Last edited by WT Sharpe; 09-02-2011 at 03:02 PM. |

^Agreed. I read for fun. Sometimes I read because I want to learn or want to discover something, but that's fun too. I probably should have put a smiley on my post because I'm certainly not beating myself up. Just wanting people to be comfortable with whatever they read in my own self-deprecating manner. |

I've never tracked my reading before. Which is the main reason why I started to track it this year. That decision was before I got the iPad! Now, I am seriously distracted by it (games, RSS feeds, forums, etc.). I'm still reading stuff, just not books. Plus, school has started back up, so I have to make myself focus more on that versus reading (and yes, I have to limit the iPad time too). I figure I'll still hit 100 books, but this won't be an accurate measure of what I've done [normally] in the past. I am, however, certain that it's going to be a good measure of how much I read in the future ... given that I'm not giving up the iPad! Marilyn |
