That Gibson guitar near Mark's was the ninth guitar made on March 3, 2005 at their Nashville Plant in Tennessee. If it's in good condition, that's a good price to pay...

Many years ago, in the early days if ebay when you sent a cheque for payment and had to wait for it to clear, I bought a Gibson SG on the basis of a picture. It was a nerve wracking process but turned out fine - the seller had been entirely honest about every hairline crack in the paintwork. I'm not sure I would take the same risk now - which is kinda sad.

There are serial number 'decoders' on line for most of the major guitar makers.

Not only funny, but similar! I sold a Martin D-28 to raise cash to buy my ticket to Japan way back when! The contract that I had would provide me with a round trip ticket but only at the end of my yearly contract. I arrived here poor as a church mouse!

Okay, Martins are made in Nazareth, Pennsylvania; Guilds in New Hartford, Connecticut; Fender produces their guitars both domestically and off-shore; and Yamaha may produce their guitars in Korea (a quick search revealed little).

As you've seen, the top makers are all building in the US. Martin has even begun an "E" series of guitars, made with only woods not on the endangered lists. (They are still permitted to 'make' guitars from endangered woods that they had in their drying sheds, but they no longer import these woods.)

Yamaha and Fender are made in several different countries. I really do wonder who the Gibson folks angred. I'm not all that fond of Gibson's personnel policies, nor their marketing methods, but they still put out quality instruments.

Yes! I found an old Epiphone Les Paul 'Standard' in great condition at one of the music shops. Their luthier is setting the neck, crowning the frets, adjusting the intonation, and cleaning the pots, and I can pick it up on Monday! Yippee!

Now all I need is a 'loop' pedal so I can make my own backing tracks and I'll be good to go. I'd like a used one if I can find it. A new one costs about $200.
