Yeah, the Sony Reader Library basically is only needed to buy from the Sony store. It's library function is more or less just regular ADE. The DRM is pure Adobe ADEPT.

Funny you mention this! That's why I never bought from Sony when I had my 900. No samples. I don't get it. Not being familiar with Kobo, I was pleasantly surprised to see they offer them.

Are you able to download samples from Kobobooks.com? Or just on their ereaders? I didn't see any options of downloading samples from Kobobooks.com. They have openers, but they're just text displayed on the website. Does Kobobooks have download samples feature, like in bn.com?

I have bought books from Sony. It's kinda like blind faith but so far the books are in good format. I can read samples from Amazon. If I'm really curious about the formatting, I download the samples from bn.com. The nook samples aren't drmed and are epubs. It's an around-about process. That's why I'm hoping Sony will have download sample features. Curious why that don't.

Just on the Kobo itself, which is sufficient for me. Like I mentioned previously I never used the Sony bookstore on my Sony 900. One reason was because of no samples. I remember getting samples from Amazon then sideloading a bunch of them just to have on the device. I didn't have an alternate eReader at that time. Back then I would just buy my books from Amazon, liberate them, and sideload.

Odd. The source article has since been updated. It just says, "The maker of Bravia televisions and Walkman music players also said yesterday it will offer a new version of its Sony Reader, a digital book reader."

The whole part about the ebookstore expansion has been removed.

I agree that they need samples. Sony now has excerpts on their store. You can access them from the bookstore on your ereader if you have a 900 or 950. They open in a pop-up window from the book description. I wish they were downloadable instead. The bigger problem is that it is hit-or-miss which books have excerpts. It's not that many.

SONY has not been a good buy in Canada, and availability has been, at best, spotty. The desktop software and the site show Canadians books we cannot buy here. I have been a huge fan of the build quality, but with everything else added in, it just never seemed like a smart buy for me. I hope they do better with the expansion of their European marketing.

I haven't tried the samples with the new KT but the previous ones were garbage. They would only get to the title page and then lock.

A link to a PCWorld review of the new Sony PRS-T1 ereader was posted in another thread. Within that article it has the following quote:

Quote:
As part of his update on the state of Sony's Reader efforts, Phil Lubell, vice president of the Networked Technology and Services Division at Sony Electronics, noted that the company continues to invest in Reader hardware, and in its Reader store, which now carries more than 2.5 million titles, a "good number"” of which are free. The Reader store will also feature heavily in Sony's coming Android tablet efforts, with Reader coming preinstalled on the Sony S1 tablet.

I assume the Reader Store was available when they launched the PRS-500 in the US in late 2006. I started using the store in early 2007. These were the days before Sony supported EPUB. The Sony books were in a different format (LRX, DRM-encrypted Broadband eBook) so you didn't have choices in bookstores unless you wanted unencrypted or public domain. I seem to recall that they were advertising something like 10,000 books available at the time!

This is the first indication that Sony plans to seriously invest in its ebook business. Releasing a new eink device is one thing; broadening its local content is quite another.

This cannot be good news in the Kobo corporate offices.
The article linked is not the same one quoted from. Bloomberg changed the article. Does this mean the one quoted from is no longer valid?

If I'm not wrong, while the EU has broken down some barriers to trade, it is still more a loose confederation with a single currency than it is a larger republic. That's huge when it comes to the legal system and distribution rights.

The US on the other hand puts trade rights with the federal government, rather than the member states. Quite a different arrangement.
