Sonys generally have no bugs and a robust feature set when brought to market. You're practically guaranteed a great experience with the device. That's why they have a cult following even though they WERE priced much higher than the competition. Last edited by SCION; 08-31-2011 at 06:04 PM. |

There's at least one Mac user who replied to me on another thread who is getting the error, so there goes that theory.

You simply refuse to add the bad record and report an error back to the user so that they know which one is bad and can fix it. And when writing to the database, you never do it live to a whole file so it can get trashed during any electrical glitch - you make a copy, write to the original, check the file, and after all is good, then delete the backup. And if anything isn't good, you copy the backup back over the original and start again, so you're never without a safe copy of the previously known good records. And if the problem lies with the file system or OS instead of the databbase, well, those problems have been licked years ago too by smart people. I haven't had to reinstall Windows because of a corrupted FS or OS since the Win95 days! And Linux is even more bulletproof. Simple comp-sci 101, and Kobo dev's FAILED miserably here! As I said in another post, this problem does NOT occur with MP3 players, smart phones with USB mass storage capability or flash drives, so Kobo is obviously doing something terribly unique and wrong. Hi everyone,
We're about to issue an upgrade that will alleviate this issue. Thanks for bearing with us and helping us by providing your feedback. In the mean time, you should be able to cancel the error message and continue using the device. Thanks, Sameer. |

Hope it's soon and hope it actually works when it gets out of the hands of (presumably) a couple of dozen testers and into the hands of thousands...

As far as I'm concerned, Sony has yet to announce what their plans are. The only thing we know for sure is that the PRS350, PRS650 and PRS950 are still listed on their website and out of stock everywhere... |

I just choose to cancel the factory reset error. It's actually no big deal for me, I can still use my device fine.

Version 1.9.10 of the firmware has just been released with, hopefully, the fix for the e-reader storage error.

Thanks for the links. Interesting. Looks like Sony has copied a lot from the Kobo Touch. But frankly it doesn't look like they have innovated much. It's the same 6" Pearl eInk screen, same IR touch screen, same features as the previous generation, just packaged a little smaller like the KT and priced $20 higher. Their main claim is that it's going to be the lightest 6" ereader at just under 6 oz. (tentative spec- nobody has one yet). But the PCWorld article is a bit suspect because it uses the wrong names for the Kobo Touch and Nook Simple Touch (calling them the Kobo WiFi and the Nook), and the wrong weight for comparison (e.g., 7.05 oz for the KT vs. the actual 6.5 oz.).

I buy and sell these things without a care, so I'm not brand loyal to anyone. My point is simply Sony have broadened the appeal of their great Reader with a competitive price. There's no denying that. Last edited by SCION; 09-01-2011 at 10:51 AM. |

I believe that until we get coloured eInk devices, or some other BIG jump in technology, it is largely going to be a matter of tweaks for readers--regardless of the brand. And with the time in the pipeline and the changes in technology that may not directly be related to eReaders, it can't really be said, with any degree of certainty, that reader A is borrowing from Reader B, though it can definitely be said that one came before the other
