The Fifth Sorceress by Robert Newcomb on my Handspring Visor in 2002. My uncle introduced me to Peanut Press, and I remember being amazed at finding an entire just released novel for free! I didn't want to pay for a whole ebook before I knew if I liked reading on a PDA.

I was reading ebooks almost exclusively when I bought my used Palm Tungsten that my first ebook on it was a non-event -- so I have no idea what it was. Same thing when I got my new Sony PRS-350. Although I love my Sony, I miss my smaller PDAs, and sometimes think about charging up the Palm and using it again.

"What nobler thought can one cherish than that the universe lives within us all?"

The first book I read on an ereader was Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries by Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Spoiler:
...in which the famed* astrophysicist tackles such pressing questions as why aliens will never hear our AM radio shows, what color the universe is (a light shade of beige), why the science in the movie "Independence Day" sucked ("the alien mothership must have been powered by the same release of Apple Computer's system software as the laptop computer that delivered the virus"), what the chances are that your tombstone will read "killed by asteroid" (about the same for "killed in an airplane crash"), and others. There are useful tidbits of knowledge, such as the fact that electromagnetic forces are so much stronger than gravity that "a child's magnet easily lifts a paper clip off a tabletop in spite of Earth's formidable gravitational tug", what are the chances that Earth will be hit by the asteroid Apophis in 2036 (stay tuned—it all depends on the exact trajectory it takes when it passes between between the Earth and our moon on (gulp!) Friday the 13th, April, 2029!), why intelligent design should not be allowed in science textbooks, and why "it's always best to avoid things that decompose the molecules of your flesh" (such as UV rays).

BIG NEWS! EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!

It was announced earlier this month that Tyson will be hosting a new television sequel to Carl Sagan's Cosmos in 2013!

Great choice. There's an interactive ebook of that for the iPad. It was great fun wiping the mist away from a window to discover an alien war machine staring in from the other side, and even more satisfying tapping the screen to disintegrate villagers with another war machine's heat rays, but for just plain reading (which is always the best kind), I prefer my Kindle.

I'm not into 'chick-lit', but being possessed by the spirit of Schubert sounds interesting, so I just tried to follow the link, and the Sony Store is down while "undergoing maintenance." From my previous experience with the Sony store, I hope they mean "renovations". Sony makes fine readers, but their store sucks.

So I looked at the Amazon site, and discovered these prices:
* Kindle Edition -- $9.99
* Hardcover -- New from $0.57
* Paperback -- New from $7.64
As it is the publishers, and not Amazon, who set the prices; I begin to suspect that some publishers are trying behind the scenes to kill ebooks.

So how did you like the book? (Notice I didn't ask, "So how did you like [INSERT BOOK TITLE HERE]?" )

The prices you quote are not necessarily set by the publishers, the $0.57 hardcover described as new is NOT an Amazon sale, it's a third party seller and is most likely a remainder which would have been bought in for almost nothing and similarly the $7.64 paperback is from a third party seller... Amazon don't list the hardcover and are asking $11.64 for the paperback.

The only prices set (fixed pricing) are those on the ebooks (especially agency pricing as they licence rather than sell) but as far as pbooks are concerned, the retailers buy (not licence) their stock at a discount from the recommended retail price and then decide what price they want to sell for, ranging from "loss leader" (sell for less than price bought in) to maximum profit (cover price). Your example simply shows a publisher (agency) price and a range of pbook prices set by the sellers rather than a great conspiracy...

For me it was 'The Firm' by John Grisham.

I was half way throught the Pback version when my Sony arrived, so I finished reading it as an ebook.

I don't consider this book to be chick-lit, but probably I don't understand the genre -- it's one that I tend to shy away from too.

I think I did pay $9.99 for it; my first books were between $9.99 and $12.99. I normally paid $12.99 to $15.99 for paperback books or $15.99 to $24.99 for hardback books at the time so anything less than $12.99 seemed acceptable to me.

I happened to have the link handy -- I keep a list of links to my books just in case I start talking about it online; it's faster than looking it up -- so I don't know if the Sony store was up when I originally posted it, but it is working now.

I loved it and it is one of my favorite books -- one of maybe two books that I have re-read since aquiring my Reader.

(It took me a couple of reads to figure out why you wouldn't have put the name of the book in -- until I put the actual name in for myself. )

The first book I read on my Nook Color was The Mating by Nicky Charles. It was a free ebook from B&N. It was a very good book and I have read the others in the series.
