I'm a great lover of detective stories, but I have a lousy memory. If I've put a book down for a week, and, when I resume reading, the detective in the book says "Ah, but Jones did <whatever>...." and I can't remember where Jones last appeared in the book, it's very useful to be able to search for "Jones" and see just what he did last do in the story.

Similarly, as happened last night, I came across the word "insufflator" in a Ngaio Marsh detective story. I'm sure that you know what an "insufflator" is, but I didn't and it increased my enjoyment of the story to be able to look it up in the Kindle's dictionary (it's one of those things with a rubber bulb that blows fingerprint powder onto objects, in case you were wondering ).

Yeah I think it will be a good deal for people who have really wanted a Sony. Its not much of an upgrade for those of us who have one of the x50's but its a great deal for those who dont want to pay the inflated price the x50's are going for on ebay right now.

Which is exactly what I do, but completely negates the only real advantage the Kindle offers (direct access to a bookstore without having to go through a PC). Of course, my tidying up usually involves fixing the css and (far too often) correcting all the typos as I read through the book.

You may very well feel that; personally I like the Kindle as a reader. It's the one that I use every day.

correction- decided to do some reading up and it seems insufflators are/were used for blowing all sorts of things- powders, gas and vapors- into patients

Actually, it does have a major feature upgrade which can easily justify its purchase for many; even if they have an x50. OTA library borrowing from the device is a fantastic feature.

The built-in 802.11b/g/n WiFi connectivity also lets users wirelessly borrow eBooks from public libraries -- a first for e-readers, apparently -- in the UK, US, and Canada.

There is one advantage the WiFi for the new T1 will give you. The ability to download eBooks direct from the library. This is going to give the Kindle a run for its money for sure.

Say that isn't a problem, you still have the dependency issues. Your average app for Linux requires a X server, libc6, then probably the GTK or QT libraries. Android doesn't have any of that. If you're talking about a command line app that is written with no dependencies (which is pretty much just simple stuff like "Hello World"), well, how would you view that since typically you aren't allowed to see a terminal? That squashes the idea of an interactive command line app. Plus Android has some security protocols in place to limit what can be done on a nonrooted device, which would include running apps outside of the Android java framework.

Good points all. Again, why I said shared libraries in existence, though I should have specified versioning as well, but then we would get in to minutiae... oh wait!

An interesting point you bring up further about Android... which I have no experience with as of yet...

Android is considered the most closed operating system on mobile devices! I think Ars Technica ran the article. That's what you're referring to with "security protocols" and the need to "root" the device. As an iPhone user, I was horribly disappointed by this revelation, since I would love a device that i don't have to root (jailbreak), and up to that point just assumed Android was wide open. And security protocols... eek, no idea what those entail, except probably a big headache!

Not intending to trash Android at all -- well maybe a little -- since I think it's overall a good move by Sony (except for the possible loss of LRF, which is a horrible move!).

I'll grab one when they improve their bookstore as mentioned in another thread. I need it to replace the NOOKtouch I sold. My Kobo will have to hold me for now until the Kindle Touch is released.
